Yeah I didn’t mind him at all. I think 4m is an overpayment for him obviously but yeah I def wish he stayed and JJ went to Anaheim
- 10inchTerror

Everyone who watches hockey nowadays thinks everything is an overpayment for every player except bonafide 1st line scorers. Fantasy sports culture has completely taken over.

Does Minny take Askarov?

Edit: Nope haha, I forgot they Dumped Stall and are not keeping Koivu. Now take Murray from us Billy!

Great pick for Minny getting Rossi. Billy G looming good this offseason.

Yes, multiple salary retentions are allowable for the same player and for more than 50% of the original. This happened in the same trade with Lehner last year involving 3 teams.
- Hockey66

Yes... Jarry looking over his shoulder at the old fan favorite would be a major mistake. If the Pens are bringing anyone back, I'd take Bones. He can still play and he fills an obvious need with a short term commitment. No idea how they make the money work.

“Picking Up” Mathesons contract didn’t eliminate the wiggle room

We’d be in exactly the same position with Horn acting as a boat anchor on the 3rd line wing

No one was taking on Horn without a massive salary holdback or some kind of equivalent dollar contract coming back our way

- RoloTahmasee

My bad, guess I should have given fuller context.

The problem is they didn't have a hole at RW to fill like they do now and I feel they need to prioritize that. Hornqvist was overpaid, but he was still a top 9 player.

Matheson makes similar money, but if they don't do that trade I'd have been fine letting Riikola and POJ compete for the job and the Pens would have a little more space elsewhere. They don't have a cheap RW option.

If we hadnt already signed Jarry and the market was asking Murray/Jarry... I would have happily considered pocketing a 1st round pick for MAF at 50%.

Domi traded to Columbus. Gave up Anderson and a 3rd (77th overall). Not a high price. Wonder if the Penguins had any discussions.

- SuperHenderson13

If Montreal wanted a player like Anderson, we didn't have one, so to me Domi was never a realistic option. I said all along we weren't a good trade match for them.

Julian likes to build his lines a specific way and they were looking for a 2nd line version of Marchand or Gallagher.

I agree with this. It seems as if the team really soured on Horny and took the best deal available, regardless of need.

However, I do think we see Matheson start at 3RD at some point early in the season, so we could still see Riikola and POJ compete for the job at 3LD. Unfortunately, the team doesn't seem very high on Riikola and reports are POJ needs more time, so maybe this is just wishful thinking on my part.

I will say, though, that the Pens were really far down the list, maybe even last, I don't know, in terms of defensive scoring. So the move will improve that. I did consider it a problem that needed to be addressed.

Yeah, if there was a way to get Guddy back with Anaheim retaining half his salary I'd consider it, especially since he'd now have a mobile partner instead of JJ.

Whoever the Leafs select at #15 will be the best player in the world that the Pens let slip through their fingers and his career will forever be compared to Kapanen's. I can't wait!

Send them Rikki haha, gives us POJ 4th on the left side and Ruh 4th on the right side. I would do it.

I wouldn't have guessed Sanderson, I thought he was a tier down from Drysdale, thats Ottawa though.
- MacPatty

Sanderson is a guy I really like as a shutdown defenseman, but yeah that seems high.

JMO... We have 4.7 mil in space. I think JR will find a cheap RW option before things settle out.

Yeah I'm hoping so, sounds like he's going to be bargain shopping. 3 RW is the most blatant hole to me. We have other scenarios where the player might not work, but there's a chance they do. I don't see it there.

I wasn’t thinking Nash would be in on Askarov but I bet Carolina and Edmonton were eying him up good haha! Love it

I could see JR getting a 2nd tomorrow for MM. if not I guess a 3rd hopefully still.

Funny, if you followed RW's guidelines of staying away from defensive players with low point totals, I don't think you end up with Rust or Marino.

I’m sure when he signed that contract he was projected to be well worth it but 4m for an at best 3rd pairing rd is a lot of money.

Rodion Amirov is arguably the best player in the draft and an absolute steal!!!

The Pens could have had him!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anyone I was really hoping would be available at that spot is gone, so I'm good. I'd take Zary from what's left.

In other news, I hope Lundqvist signs with WSH so the Pens can continue to terrorize him on the regular.
