I had this question awhile back and I’ll try to interpret what I was told. The 7.5% applies during the year on potential bonuses. So right now, Rangers are at 7.1 mil in “potential” bonuses. That’s already a million over the 7.5% allowance, or 6.1 mil. (not counting what Lafreniere or other picks could get. That’s also not counting Miller or Kravtsov.) Kakko is 2.6 in potential. If Laf gets similar, now you’re at 3.65 over. That means your real upper limit is now down to 77.85. Now, after season, once players actual bonuses are calculated, any overages can be split over next 2 seasons. There where no overages for Rangers this past season. It’s rare if everyone hits. It’s the potential number that affects our ceiling in season. Another reason why they might trade pick #22 or current prospect. As far as Strome, noooo. Do not give him 4.5.

All those bonuses are why they moved Staal.

I am not exactly a tried and true Strome supporter, but $4.5M for a guy that put up 59 points would be a bargain comparatively speaking. If they aren’t going that high they might as well not even extend an offer. In recent years, players are making roughly $1M/10 points. Obviously, this season will be the start of a change, but I can’t think it will be too drastic all at once.

Id happily take him at 4.5m if they cant find an upgrade, shoot, Id take him for 2 years at that price.

I don’t get the hate for the guy. If no one can be had in a trade I don’t think he’s the worst thing in the world on a 2 year deal.

Totally agree.

Cyrill is the X factor. If he can slide into the number 2 spot then Strome isn't a must have.

Having Zib as 1c, Chytil as 2c, and ? At 3c, Howden as 4c isn't too promising

Maybe Baron can step up year after next.

None of current centers have any grit or are too hard to play against.

The hate is he’s terrible 2 way player. He’s 27. Has been a mediocre player his whole career. The bad penalties. (I believe he was 4th in league at 5x5 minors)many of those short handed situations ended up in momentum swinging goals against. Had career high 18 goals. 4 were empty net. He had 1 point in the 3 playin games. An errant pass to Kreider that found Panarin on other side of rink, that he buried. Piling up assists playing with Panarin doesn’t get you 4.5. Those are the contracts that kill you. I don’t see Gorton sitting on his hands.

So just to cover the big 2 guys, Kakko and Laffy they need to keep 7.5m in space if both hit all the bonuses. Thats insane. Even going over the cap by 7.5% only covers 6m of that so they really need to keep back from the ceiling by 2m plus whatever other room they want for mid season trades etc.

Are the performance bonuses standard across the league in general? What are they? I'm very curious if they are realistically attainable.
