Most offensive dmen are...Krug is the same but just will be overpaid for a lot more years. As i stated, Wings could use an offensive dman considering almost everyone else aside from Hronek are stay at home guys that don't put up many points. Could also use someone for the PP.

I get what you’re saying. I wouldn’t want krug for what he’s going to get either but he’s nowhere near as bad defensively as gustafsson. Maybe Seider can come in and provide some offense.

And if Yzerman tells them he's not interested the Wings don't have a declining dman eating up what should be valuable cap space and a mid to late 2nd round pick in 2021, big deal, sorry this deal is a massive win for the Rangers, can't believe it only cost them a 2nd to get rid of Staal.
Yzerman should be holding teams over a barrel if they want to dump their junk on the Wings.

Why should the Wings care about cap space for 1 year? They are not going to be close to the cap max and will have plenty of cap space again next summer. You act like the Wings just screwed themselves and will lose good young players for peanuts because they took on 1 year of Staal for a free 2nd round pick. It is possible to get very good players in the 2nd round you know. Hronek the Wings best defenseman this season was drafted 53rd overall in 2016 (not 6 years ago). Bertuzzi one of their best forwards was drafted 58th overall in 2013 and it didn't take him 6 years to be a full time NHLer. Look at Tampa with Kucherov, Point, Cirelli, Killorn ect...all 2nd or 3rd round picks.

Oh Krug is as bad defensively. Look at his last 4 seasons and he's a minus player (one season was even at 0) on a good defensive team like Boston while putting up 50 points.

Possible that Seider comes in and brings some offense but that is a lot to put on him right away. Gustafsson for 1 or 2 years at 2.5 mil per wouldn't be too bad even if you mainly use him as a PP specialist. Might help the forwards put up a bit better point totals and maybe keep them in games if the PP is clicking.

I know there's great players selected in the 2nd round and I hope the Wings nail that pick if they keep it but I really hoped Yzerman could weaponize Detroit's cap space to get more then just that.

I bet Yzerman regretted taking Kucherov in the second round. Point in the third round. Guy can't draft at all.

I wish he could have gotten the Ranger 22nd overall pick they got from Carolina for 2020 or a 1st rounder for 2021 but obviously nobody is looking to deal a 1st for a one year cap dump. Like i said, i think teams that would deal a 1st for a dump are probably looking to dump bad contracts with 4 or more years left and that is not something i would want the Wings to take on. There are other teams that want to do the same thing also so that could be driving the prices they pay to dump lower right now. Teams could also be looking to trade players that can give them picks or prospects back instead of doing cap dumps to cut salary.

Anyhow, i don't mind getting a 2nd for 1 year of Staal and i think Yzerman will make at least one more of these short term cap dump trades. If another team gets a 1st for a 1 year cap dump trade then i guess we can complain about Yzerman not getting a 1st but until then, we have to wait to see what teams are willing to pay for cap dumps and how bad the cap dump has to be to get a 1st round pick.

"While Staal's cap hit was $5.7 million, his actual salary for the 2020-21 season was the lowest of his contract, at $3.2 million, making him attractive to a team looking to get to the salary floor but wanting to save cash."

Ok, actual money to Staal is good!!!

Lol, yeah such a huge win for Detroit, can't wait to see what this 2nd round pick looks like in 5 or more years, seriously I hope it pans out!

Dude, chill out.

Staal sucks. No one is disputing that. But so does pretty much the entire Detroit roster.

Detroit was always gonna be terrible next year. Staal is a warm body who is likely not significantly better or worse than whoever else might have been stuck on the left side of the third pair. He's overpaid (obviously) but it's only one year, and the Wings have space.

Basically Yzerman just bought a draft pick for $4.2 million (i.e. the money actually owed to Staal; cap hit is irrelevant because the Wings are unlikely to be a cap team).

The second rounder may end up a bust (as second rounders often do) but has the potential to be a good player too, and the Wings gave up literally nothing except a couple mill in cash to get it. There is no risk. That's just smart asset management.

I am chill, thanks for your concern.

Glad Wings fans are happy with this, sincerely hope that 2nd round pick turns into something great if Detroit keeps it.

That's why having Petry gives the Habs a huge advantage next season. He can pitch in the double headers.

"Happy" is probably too strong. More like a head nod and a "yup, that makes sense."

I think this is a win-win trade. It's clearly a big win for NYR, but a modest one for Detroit too, with the potential for more depending on how the pick turns out.

Some people just aren’t going to understand how much of a breath of fresh air it is to see a gm make quality asset management decisions no matter how significant they are because they didn’t experience Holland do what he did the last 10 years before he left.
