I wouldn't go after Turris, he's not really a grinder/checking C, he's not what is needed
- PatC80

Turris? Useless.

It's an excellent deal for the Habs. Petry would have gotten way more as a UFA imo.

Very happy about this. Term isn't too long either.

- Scabeh

I'm not sure I'd consider this a great deal, petrys not bad, but that could hurt on the backend of the deal

$1M
- Atomic Wedgie

Trade Freddy to OTT for 2 second round pics?

OTT has to get to the floor ($22M?) with buying out Ryan. They could use cap hit of $5M and still be cheap with actual paid money $1M.

We use those two pics for trades.

To add...his best before date was 4 years ago. Just be spinning our wheels again if we add him. I want to make this team better.

Can still be bought out, but can't be put on waivers. (as far as I know)

Oh please.

"Not bad"? Petry is goddamn awesome. He's been our most used defenseman with Weber and provides great mobility and stability on defense.

He's 32, signing him to 4 years is just perfect. And the amount is way less than he would have gotten as a UFA.

You won't find one Habs fan unhappy about this.

It's a great deal. Period.

it's a terrible deal for the Habs for two reasons.

1: Spending a lot on goaltenders and defense means no money left for forwards.
2: I wanted the Leafs to get Petry, I guess now it's Pietrangelo as the only option.

- PatC80

If they were smart, they would do the exact opposite.

Sincerely,

Kyle Dubas.

you might be right, there likely will be teams that panic and don't qualify RFA's. I do think Dubas should be patient..
Guys like Ryan, who might still be able to provide some offense would be nice to have on cheap deals.. If they Leafs do get Pietrangelo, they can move out a forward and still have depth

- PatC80

I think it’s one or the other. My guess is that the market will be really split. Teams with money will bid up the price for the top guys. Below that, there will be deals and not just for scrubs. Enough teams will be hurting that good players will be available for a good price.

To me, it makes sense to spend our money in that second market. If we go after Pietrangelo, that’s pretty much our summer. In my view the first problem is the hole on the right side with Rielly. Let’s address it but let’s take advantage of a good market to fix other holes.

He's overrated. He's good, but he's no elite dman. JMO.

I actually think he's underrated by most.

His game has really taken another level in the last 3 years. He doesn't get enough recognition for what he brings to the table every game.

He's a great top 4 option and can replace on a top pair without looking out of place at all.

It's just my opinion, I think he's decent, but I don't love him. I certainly don't think he is top pair material on a contender

Petry actually is what Leafs fans hope Muzzin would bring.
He's a very solid d-man -- that can indeed even play top pair if necessary.

Yeah but is $6.25 really the going rate for a real good #3 defenseman?
