Marner to Ottawa for the 5th overall and then Toronto signs Pieterangelo seems like it makes too much sense

as long as Toronto has already paid that crazy 14 million signing bonus for this coming season

Marner getting paid $15M this season

yeah, I am really not sure how it works with the bonuses whether or not these guys have got it already, but I think they have

if so, Marner only gets 700K the rest of the season in cash

and then Ottawa can trade him again next draft

I'm not sure if the signing bonus dates changed because of the wonky season but, in theory, Marner should've received his $14.3M bonus on 7/1

OTT seems kind of messy financially though. I wonder if they can really afford to fork over massive signing bonuses to him once a year for the last few years of that contract. He gets $9.6M, $7.25Mx3 over the last four years of the deal

I like the pick, as much as I like the idea of potentially getting an impact center in zary or bourque I recognize that our best prospects are forwards and we literally have next to zero D in our system. As well Schneider will likely be nhl ready sooner than later as he is an older prospect in the draft.

If we intend to keep our second I personally would have leaned with a forward here knowing I can probably get one of poirer, Cormier or villaneauve in the next round.

I mean could you imagine Ottawa adding 11 million to their cap this season but only paying 700k? thats a dream for them

I doubt we see Hank get bought out at the beginning of the window. I can see this going down to the end

yeah and then there's a 2nd buyout window if they get a player to file for arbitration, which seems like a guarantee

wouldn't want Marner for that return, but would take Nylander for the 28th+

Nylander only makes 2.5 mil in cash this season with a 6.9 mil cap hit, I could see Ottawa into that

Really you wouldnt trade the #5 for Marner (with bonus paid)?
I think you're over valuing #5 just a bit!

Ill happily pay the air fare if Ottawa uses some of that cap space to take Smith and/or Lundqvist off our hands.

i'm not the one paying the contract.......marner is a better player, but looking at our owner, Nylander seems like a better add for Ottawa.

yes, Marner's bonus is paid this year, but he has one next year, and the year after, etc, etc. can't see melnyk taking that on.

nylander seems like a more logical choice when you factor everything in.

that being said, i can't see the leafs trading nylander to a rival.....i'm sure they would have similar offers from other teams and would prefer to trade him outside of the division

well including this coming season, the Leafs have around 21 million in cash still to pay Nylander the next 4 seasons

the next 5 seasons for Marner, the Leafs have about 34 million in cash still to pay him

but yeah, Ottawa would probably be in a bind having to give Marner his 9.6 mil bonus next July 1st

that Marner contract is insanity

that's the key.......all things being equal, i would much rather have Marner, just can't see Melnyk approving a deal that comes with those kinds of bonuses
