This is a weird report to me. Why wouldn’t Hornqvist decline the trade if he was so mad about it? Unless he pulled an Allen Iverson and had a moment of rage where he accepted the trade out of spite and then decided he didn’t actually want to leave.

It's pretty messed up if true. I mean you figure JR would have at least had a discussion that the trade might happen. Also that there is no love lost.

To be clear I'm still not a fan. Offensive defensemen who don't drive play have little value to me.

And yeah they still haven't improved that 3rd line while losing Hornqvist and possibly Simon. Agree the forward won't help, so I don't know what the plan is, hope 2 prospects can play on the 3rd line? Bump up Tanev and break up the 4th line?

The thing about Matheson is that his micro stats would suggest that he should be better at driving play than he has been. How much of it is playing on an awful team that doesn’t drive play in general? His relative stats aren’t good but they’re also not the absolute worst either. Pretty on par for a bottom pairing d man getting defensive deployment that he’s not built to handle.

Ive talked myself into Matheson maybe being ok from an on ice perspective but the trickle down of tying up so much cap in him is going to be really bad.

I think Matheson could be a pretty functional bottom pairing defenseman on this team if things break right for him and he meshes into our system. My sticking point is his cap hit. Even if we manage to trade Johnson, a bottom pairing defenseman being paid that much is a poison pill. And that forward we got is garbage. The cap/asset management this offseason has just been really bad which was something we really couldn’t afford.

I think the plan is for him to be the 2nd pairing D. I think this may Pettersson's last year with us which makes it a little more digestible especially if JJ is traded. The forward was only acquired in ZARs place until he comes back from Injury.

Right now we’re betting on Matheson handling bottom pairing duties better than he did in Florida. Betting that he can not only do that but also be a top 4 guy is such a classic Rutherford dunce move.

When he was with Madden he said he was happy with the cap space. Also said they have enough to sign Jarry and Lafferty. Idk where that comment came from.

If this is true I have a major issue with the franchise allowing a senile mental midget to once again cause the franchise to look bad, disrupt the locker room and make a rash decision without being professional and speaking to the player before making a move like that. That’s Busch-league
