NHL is hosting a conference call this afternoon with GM’s to outline the logistics of the upcoming virtual draft. Likely more technological detail, from pre/post pick camera-shots, to dedicated phone lines for GM’s to communicate as they might normally at a draft table.

- Theo Fox

I remember the NFL draft with the various GM's sequestered in their homes and making their selections as TV cut to them. Their digs ranged from a home that you would see in Architectural Digest to a 1970's style basement with the GM sitting at a folding card table.

When they show Bowman announcing the Hawks pick, I have two questions.
1) What will Stan's place look like? (why do I think of it being like the 1970's basement)
2) Will he be eating potato chips?

Wiz, what’s your take on Beaudin, I was impressed in the one game I saw him play, seemed to be steady and in right position on the ice. I hope he’s not packaged as a sweetener, so far I like his game although a small sample size.
- Angotti

Too small a sample size, but he is smart all over the ice, and that is why the took him..I am not trying to make a comparison but Nashville traded Sam Girard...when it happened I thought, "Well, Preds didn't give up much for Kyle Turris/Matt Duchene 3 -way deal, in that Girard was small and would have struggles....

Well, each time I looked this year, he proved to me he is an NHL and pretty damn good one...he is/was smaller than Beaudin.
My point is simply guys like this make it...if they get comfortable in the zones were they needed work, they seem to get better in their area of strength.

Fine - then trade them.

Go to them and tell them (and, BTW, tell the fans, too) that this is a rebuild, that they aren’t likely to be playing for the Cup while they still have quality skills under their current contracts, and if they waive their NMCs, the Hawks will try to move them to wherever they want to go. Retain salary.

Does Kane want to go back to Buffalo? Toews to Winnipeg? Keith to somewhere he can bring a defense up to Cup-contending levels? Let Crawford go. Certainly something could be worked out so all of them could move to teams in contention and be paid.

But stop telling all of us (players included) that we’re “turning the corner” on the losing pandemic and it will just disappear.

Boqvist was supposed to be 3 years out (and probably should have had at least another year in the AHL). There are no delusions from the "core" about where this team is. If they can't see it, that is their fault. It is quite obvious to everyone else.

They are picking #17. You shouldn't expect that player to make a notable impact for about 3 years. At that point, some or all of the core could possibly be gone.

- Chunk

1.5 years anyway depending what they pick and I think Boqvist is still 1.5 years out from being a "complete" Defenseman.

I don’t think Saad is going to get more than $5.5M/yr in this market, not with a stale cap. If this is the case then why trade him? Although there’s no comparison in talent between Saad and Hossa, he is the closest that we have to Hossa’s two way game. It is imperative that our young forwards develop a good two way game, and watching Saad will be very beneficial for them. sign Saad for $5.5/6 years, we will never get back what he’s really worth.
- Angotti

If they offered him an extension tomorrow, 4@$5m he would be an idiot not to take it this cap can still go down in the future. Maybe not in beginning number but in a escrow based on actual revenues and maybe it does go down? It won't be guaranteed butts are going to sellout seats.

NHL is allowing teams to open facilities for voluntary training beginning Oct. 15. Max 12 guys on the ice/ 6 in weight room at a time.

Everyone will be tested at least twice weekly, and anyone who has had COVID must also undergo a cardiac screening.

We all cannot try and get pass the Syd / Ovi parallel where the penguins will continue to shave and add players trying to extend the run.

So any moves that are major Chicago subtractions will only come as Cap relief and good vet adds, not future building blocks.

It all depends upon the want of Strome...he has little RFA wiggle and a team in treated knows that..he knows he has o prove stuff to them, etc.
Perfect for Edmonton if they still have a pick at #17.

So much of what we are talking about is tied to
two very different events.

IF Carolina or anyone above them takes Yaroslav Askarov.

and exactly how picks 3 -7 play out....to me, I could be on TV and alter where each prospect board changes after each and everyone of those picks...I must sound like a mad scientist, but seismic changes will be the order of the day after 4, 5, 6 and there is a great possiblity a team who never thought a certain forward will be there, discards their plan to take one of early two defenders, changed the board after that for the next team, altering their choice....as the dominos fall, I am not sure what those 12 picks are, and I have mulled over them a lot more than most people have time.
So I don't know if Askarov slips past Carolina, and Edmonton too.
You just have to think maybe you start finding out if teams want to trade a slot or two if the merry go round that started earlier changes a team like Edmonton or Montreal does.

But in general, I think the Hawks have a gut in their crosshairs that they like enough that they are not worried too much about being there, but you never know who slips who gets moved to earlier selection slots. The beauty of the defat.

- wiz1901

It's the same question we were arguing when we thought we had the 9th pick and needed a goalie (still do), now for these teams picking high "do we use a high pick on a Russian goalie who won't play for us next year and could end up being a bust?"

2 stacks of blank contracts behind his desk. Stack #1 - Contracts with NMC/NTC - reaches the ceiling. Stack #2 - Contracts w/o NMC/NTC - 1 contract with a 2012 date stamped on the top of it....

I'll modify that slightly to "I hope we pick a Forward in the first round and the 2nd Goalie picked whatever round that is."

I wonder who leaked that the deal was as good as done since those two rather important details weren't resolved.

@PierreVLeBrun

Trade call just wrapped up: Colton Seviour and Mike Matheson to Pittsburgh for Hornqvist, sources say.

There's a later tweet where LeBrun says no salary retained.

Florida gains $775,000 in cap space in the deal.

I don't know why, but for some reason I have a feeling that Saad will be headed to the Panthers.

If Saad goes anywhere, the Hawks are significantly farther from being a contender than they are right now.

Good. By the time the Hawks are actually a contender, Saad will be over the hill. Get value now and build for the future.

I think they are building for the future but need more Saads not less. If someone wanted to ridiculously overpay for him like a mid first rounder plus, fine.

Saad is still young, relatively healthy and should be able to contribute well into the current rebuild.
