Well since Marner and Nylander are both way overpaid and good trade material on this thread, what would you expect to get in return for each player? Not a package , just a one for one deal.

Marner for Tkachuk.

Maybe ...I'm open minded to all possibilities. Ideally you get a D that's entering his prime rather than exiting but if that's not available then you've got to consider this option.

They may not "have" to decimate the roster. They need to find about 5-6 million in cap room. I don't like the strip the depth bare model. But maybe it's Nylander and maybe there's a really good deal out there that gets you young affordable pieces in return. Maybe ..

And they know more than us about how this league may look financially in years 3 and beyond which is an important variable in all of this as well.

All of this to say whatever happens I'm sure it'll be well thought out but will come with risk (and will be heavily criticized by Max)

I don’t pretend to watch other teams enough but you have to think there are comparables to Parayko or just below from a team that is hurting financially. Brodie isn’t sexy but would be fine with Rielly and would allow the Leafs to put together a
solid D corps plus keep Hyman next year.

I don't think the comparison is made in that he's looking for comparable players. He's looking at players who play comparable minutes against top flight competition, and where they seem to peak/drop off.

Yes, a guy like Giordano just won a Norris. Hedman is a stud and doesn't look to be slowing down. Yes, guys like doughty, suter, Keith aren't exactly waiver fodder right now...

The question that's left is how many of those guys would you prefer to be tied to in year one of a 7 year deal for big money, knowing the comparables minutes/level of competition wise seem to have a large history of downward play from that point on, because that's not really up for debate.

It would be a stretch to say anyone on that list outside of Giordano was better at 30-35 than they were at 27-30. Hedman and Carlson get passes there...

Yes, and that's precisely why I think there's a fundamental flaw with his sample set. He's comparing apples and oranges -- pretending that all fruit should age the same based on relative sunlight, the same substrate, irrigation, etc.*

Btw, as I mentioned somewhere in this thread, Suter just had his statistically most productive season (if extrapolated to a full season). So yeah, there's plenty of outliers beyond Gio.

* Yes, I work in the nursery/greenhouse industry. What do you expect from someone who lives in Grimsby?!

What if we offered Pietrangelo $6M X 7 years, and explicitly told him that the team, fans and media would look the other way while he bullied Marner for $2M in lunch money every year?

You're not saying all canvases are painted with the same brush by saying hard miles = degradation.

There's a case to be made that a high percentage of the time it isn't working out well, change my mind.

Yes there are exceptions to every rule, but if you're a betting man... And 60+ million dollars is a rather large bet, you don't bet on exceptions.

Again, which guy(s) off that list are you content tying yourself to for 7 years at 8-9 million per, year one being age 30/31 season. Is it Suter?

I'm passing on Doughty, Subban, Keith, Seabrook, Letang, Burns, Buff, Karlsson, Yandle, Giordano (wasn't worth that chunk of cap at 30/31), Weber... Could go and on.

Even a guy like Chara could very well have gone then other way. Him not dropping off is a pleasant surprise...

You need to think about your priorities. Don’t go for the sizzle, go for the meatloaf. My wife is from Grimsby, I understand the angst.
