Bettman said exactly that in a presser last weekend.
You gotta love the snide SOB - he couldn't resist pointing out that he got considerable heat for not naming the bubble cities earlier - and he was proven right to hold off until the last moment.
I know I'm the only one on earth, but I love the Bettman. - Atomic Wedgie

I've said all along, not on the Pietrangelo train but I would live with it. Regardless, it shouldn't be a slam dunk and this guy does an immaculate job explaining why.
Looking at you Jones. 😉 - joel878
I'm glad I'm not making the decisions - definitely a tough call.
I think after you grind through all of the variables you come back to one thing. Is your window to win the next 3-4 years? If so you roll the dice and lock him up b/c acquiring a guy like him is next to impossible. |

I know, doesn't change the fact that Toronto paid him a whopping 7.5 a year.
Don't get me started on the Marner contract. |

It was a front-loaded deal which makes it better if they need to trade him... (I hope they don't) |

I prefer my wings seasoned and bbq'd with a side of heat.
Once I hit 40 that extra deep fried goodness became too much. |

And the cost of finding the cap space to sign him in the short term. To me it comes to whether you can do it without moving one of the big four. I hate the idea of moving a skilled 22 year old for a skilled 30 year old. I know how big the skill and the positional need is but I still don’t like it.
If that’s the cost, and we’re still tight throughout the lineup, I’d rather trade for or sign a very good, less expensive guy instead. Somebody at $5 or so million. Maybe you can do a Freddy trade. Or maybe you can do a Willie trade for somebody good and young and of expensive. |

it's forgotten that we only got nylander at 6.9 for 5 years and 10.2 for 1.
his contract should have been 6 years @ $40m, not 6 years @ $45m. something like $9.4ish for 1 and 5 years at $6.1ish would have much more fair to the team and still plenty player friendly. |

Im glad I'm not either, even in that 3-4 year window, history doesn't suggest it ages well. |

But we know it isn't a slam dunk.
Signing Pietro is a risk. But it fills a massive hole and gives us a chance in the next three years to make a run.
I could take or leave Pietrangelo. But I want the leafs to acquire a significant upgrade on D, and the idea of getting that upgrade without giving up assets is enticing. |

This is simply not true.
He won at that weird level with the Pembroke Lumber Kings - where he had the most money to spend.
He didn't really do jack-squat with the Greyhounds.
And he won at the AHL level - with a budget 3X what every other team had.
I worry that Dubas relies too much on guys from his past, dismissing other candidates. - Atomic Wedgie
Keefe won OHL and CHL Coach of the Year in 2014-15 with the Soo and they had their statistical best year ever under his watch.
I would equate that with "success" at that particular level.
The Marlies having "3x" the budget of other AHL teams is reductive and overstated. |
