I would like to see the Leafs sign Alex Pietrangelo to a front end loaded contract. My concern is then how do you sign Morgan Reilly, Zack Hyman and yes I want Freddie back!

Trade Alex Kerfoot and Andreas Johnsson for picks and prospects.

Sign Joe Thornton and Jason Spezza as the 3rd line and 4th line centres. Nick Robertson can replace Johnsson.

The only way that this makes sense is that the Leafs would have a pipeline of quality prospects coming up to the team on entry level contracts. But, I believe they have the best scouting team in the business, so roll the dice boys...

his cap hit was 6.5, but he made 7.5 last year, and considering what he'll be offered, doubt leafs get him for less than 9
- haywoodjablome

Oh, fair enough.

He’s not signing for 7M. Somewhere in between Carlson (8) and Josi (9). Probably closer to Josi.

You think wearing a Leafs jersey in public doesn’t take some massive cajones?

Technically jets have two teams one that used to suck and now sucks more in Arizona and the disaster that no self respecting NHL player wants to play for.

Brian Little says hi.

I hope the Leafs sign him for 7 years at $10 mil per. Then they will be the 1st team to have 5 players taking up over $50 mil in cap space. Even Dubas wouldn't do this... or would he?

Toronto’s only complication is having $6.1 Million in available cap space. Dubas would have to clear a lot more to re-sign RFA’s Ilya Mikheyev and Travis Dermott and have enough room to offer a competitive deal to Pietrangelo. That likely would entail repeating the maneuver that Toronto did last season in acquiring an injured player in David Clarkson that could be placed on LTIR to open up room or by moving out another salary in Andreas Johnsson or William Nylander.
- mikeinbuffalo

I was informed from these fine posters that the Leafs do not want to be in the LTIR business.
I would say buh-bye Nylander

sounds like leafs can get him for 8 mil.
Especially if its majority in signing bonus.
I think this is doable... 6 by 8 or 6 by 8.25?

- aries1976

The Blues are offering that, or better, already (around $8 for7 or 8 years.....that $7.7 number is apparently wrong). When you factor in a much higher tax rate in Toronto, there is no chance that deal works. If he is going to Toronto, it will almost have to be something north of $9 mil/yr.

Maybe, correct, but sounds like up front money is not there for the Blues, and hard to blame Stillman his pockets aren't as deep as MLSE's

That’s true, but it actually has more to do with Armstrong and the way he likes to do contracts. He is apparently not a fan of the signing bonus thing. If push comes to shove, though, the Blues ownership group can make it happen - some pretty big rollers in there, including the Taylor family (Enterprise Rental Car founders). Anyway, who knows. As a Blues fan, I’m pretty ambivalent at those dollars and term. If they sign Petro, it might cost them Parayko in a couple of years. Not sure that’s a good idea.

We can help you out with Parayko if you want to keep your captain. We’re sensitive about signing away other team’s captains.

Again for the umpteenth time...

Don't sign 31 yr old D men for term and big $... no matter how good...

you can cite all his facts and bonafides till the cows come home.. The Leafs will regret this signing in 3 yrs tops.

Is he a piece the Leafs need.. Yes.. Does he push them over the top.. An emphatic No.

He comes from a team that enhances & magnifies his attributes... The Leafs simply don't play that way and aren't there yet.

Agree, I also think the Armstrong likes 27 yr old Parayko at $5.5 M more than 30 yr old Pietrangelo at $8 M plus. Biggest problem for Blues is the number of NTC and M-NTC they have handed out. Only O'Rielly and Parayko don't have them of the key players

Hopefully they sold out prior to the pandemic.

Car rental isn't really a lucrative place to be right now.

Laid down a nice 4 hour 100km on the bike this afternoon. Time to destroy this here Bitondo's meatball panini, fully loaded of course.

If anyone thinks 1 guy is getting this team over the top.. when you have to substract substantial pieces to fit him in... is nuts.

People talking about getting over the top.. Hell how about just winning a round..

Leafs are getting pretty good at getting out of bad contracts. It has gotten to the point I am confident they can do it again if necessary.

Not sure just how substantial those pieces are.

Correct, he's 30 and would be a big add to the Leafs. Chara was 29 when he signed with the Bruins, think of all that regret. Does he push him over the top - who knows, its a step they have to take if available IMO.

Pietrangelo views a deal worth a total of 64m as taking a hometown discount to stay in his preferred St. Louis. Leafs fans really need to keep that in mind when suggesting what deal he'd take from Toronto lol.

I'm also pretty sure that you can't sign a player not able to play for the purpose of circumventing the cap so Mike in Buffalo would be wrong in suggesting it.

Nobody on a hockey forum has to have realistic expectations. I can dream he plays for 5 million a year for his favourite team growing up!
