Matheson can skate like the wind and has some offensive skills. But, he too often makes the silliest decisions/plays. He looked like the real deal when he first came out of college. He’s been kind of a train wreck the last two years. A change of scenery needed for him, IMO. He seems to be his own worst enemy at times.

Whatever?

Matheson's impact on ice is incredibly mediocre the past 2 years, and a Panthers fan just a few posts earlier even called his last 2 seasons a train wreck.

Did I mention Matheson was a healthy scratch multiple times last season, including game 3 against the Islanders?

He’s a 3rd pairing defender signed for too much money and too much term.

Hopefully Hornqvist does the Penguins fan base a favour and doesn’t waive.

Rutherford is running that franchise like a 12 year old playing Be A GM mode on NHL 21 with little to no knowledge of hockey

Last year it was trade Risto for a number 2 center, now trade him for a 33 year old 5.3 mil RW who scored 33 pts last year and is signed for 5 years.
- GilPerreault11

Not for Hornqvist. It’s amazing he’s still here. Period.

He’s slightly better than Matheson, and his value is dropping by the day.

What? No he won't.

https://www.capfriendly.c.../players/michael-matheson

Salary bonuses are normally paid each year by 7/1.

Matheson's salary breakdown the next 6 years is below:

20-21: No bonus, $3.5M salary
21-22: No bonus, $5M salary
22-23: No bonus, $4M salary
23-24: $2.5M bonus, $4M salary ($6.5M total salary)
24-25: $2.5M bonus, $4M salary ($6.5M total salary)
25-26: $2M bonus, $4.5M salary ($6.5M total salary

What an odd salary structure, however, with teams trying to save money for next season it works for the Pens. As long as he is serviceable and an upgrade for their blueline I like this for the Pens. Horny has seen better days. 3 Years ago when I lived in Pitt I loved him for that team.

Who wants to bet Horquist just went off to oblivion to Florida while he collects his 5.3 mil before he retires and we hear of Metheson making a difference here and there while Pitt is in the playoffs? Both teams dumped bad contracts, one is a 26 year old D who scores in double digits and skates. We'll see who we hear of more in the future.

Whatever they take less of a cap hit for a 26 year old D who skates well and scores goals in double digits and will no doubt go up a couple with Crosby and Malkin setting him up on the PP. They lose a 33 year old forward who signed a contract for 5.3 mil contract in 2018-19 so I'll wait to see the awful part.
- GilPerreault11

Awful has been watching Matheson over the last two years yakking up the puck far too often, and frequently leaving guys to enjoy their ham sammitch in front of FL’s net. He has the talent, I think he’s to the point where he actually thinks too much and it leads to hesitation, which leads to bad things. Change of scenery will be good for him.

It's hard not to notice how often the saying in bold is thrown around, but I wonder how often it actually ends up being true regarding on ice results for the player.

If Matheson can get his head right he’ll be a very good player down the road.
I wonder how much the Petersson incident in Vancouver affected him mentally. He was getting death threats on social media from Vancouver fans (one even threatened his dog’s life), idk if it’s related at all, but he seemed to go downhill after that all happened.

It is of high debate how much of an upgrade Matheson is for the Penguins defense.

They just signed 2 LHD's this year, and they have another one in Dumoulin that they like, along with the strange Jack Johnson signing.

Matheson gives them 5 total LHD's.

Matheson is better than Jack Johnson, but he is measurably worse than Dumoulin, Marcus Pettersson, and Juuso Riikola, although Riikola played half as many even strength minutes.

Are they going to play Matheson on the 3rd pair and send Jack Johnson to outer space? Are they going to have Matheson play his off side as an RHD on their 2nd pair over John Marino, who they seem to really like?

This is a good thing. Edmunds still in a red no contact jersey and Milano I think was practicing normal.

The bills can’t run that nickel defense like they did vs the dolphins. The rams use a lot of 2 tightend heavy sets. We would be out beefed and out muscled in the run game

Whatever bro, trade him for a 33 year old 5.3 mil RW on a 5 year contract who scored 33 pts last year. You are a Reinhart, Skinner and every other current Sabre, besides Risto who punches or something, who leads them to the bottom 5 GENIUS. Tell me more.

The Sabres made a management change this off-season. Jason Botterill, the man who drafted you, is gone. What has been the message from his replacement, Kevyn Adams?

"Just to work as hard as I can to make sure I'm there next season and do whatever it takes to give myself the best chance to be a part of the Sabres team."

At this point, Cozens is firmly in the driver's seat for 20-21. If he doesn't make the team, it's all on him.

No one wants Hornqvist.

Point is these D men (even really bad ones) are moved at will yet we have one who's been on the block for three years, wants to be traded, probably has a smidge of value left and he's still here.
