Lou Boudreau back in the studio during intermissions with the table top hockey board (without the rods and slots) with the thin steel players supported by wood blocks talking strategy.

Wow what a classic memory...too bad as I assume no video of that!

Lou sometimes had an injured Hawks player, or GM Tommy Ivan as an intermission guest. They would breakdown the previous period's scoring by moving the players around the board recreating the play. This was the pre video tape era. Like you said - classic.

Dan Kelly was the worst!
- powerenforcer

Not sure if he did this to try to sell the team and appeal to the younger audience but I remember Dan Kelly would say Johnny Toews, Patty Kane, Patty Sharp, Bobby Lang, Marty Havlat, etc.

Johnson has a long way to go to be better than Burish. I think we forget the speed of Burish. I don't see that with Johnson.
Entwhistle is nowhere close to Kampf as a skater. Wing may be a better fit for him.

- Elbows15

Johnson does have a learning curve to get through still and could end up falling short but do like his overall game more than Burish. At least Burish made it to the show and was fast as you pointed out.

Entwistle isn't a bad skater. Not the fastest or most agile but skating hasn't been an issue either to hamper his effectiveness. I agree that he could end up as a winger. Either way, he's destined to be a lights out bottom 6 forward.

What kind trade offer could hawks propose to Colorado for zadorov? Big physical d man paired with boqvist would be good pairing. He gives the hawks a dimension hawks don't have on the backend he is a rfa though.
- Scott1977

Zadorov is an RFA and earned $3.2M last year (age 25). Guessing he's due around that same amount.

IMO, not worth trading for his rights and paying that salary unless two of Maatta, de Haan, or Murphy is gone to open a spot and free up money for (A) Zadorov and (B) a cushion to re-sign our own RFAs.

If there is a trade, maybe a 1:1 trade of Zadorov for one of these defenders?

Taking on any new players has to be carefully considered so as to not block a path for a youngster on the cusp of making it to the NHL in a season or so.

Well I am not a liar...this was in infancy of WGN hockey on television. He wasn't the regular but he did do them.
- wiz1901

Do you remember a playoff game, somewhere around '68, playing Rangers, series started in NY, lost first two, then win two at home, back in NY Bobby Hull knocks Ed Giocomin over with a slap shot from about 75' he made the save but Hawks won next two games?

Hull was so into Giacomin,s head that they finally played Villemure every time the Hawks played the Rangers.

So - Bears win - but:

There was an o-interference on Tate on the last play - ok - but wasn’t there also a d-interference on Jackson that should have been called? Offsetting penalties, Giants get another play?

Or - did the o-interference end the play?

Bears got a little bit screwed on the clock stoppage to spot the ball a couple of plays previously. If they didn’t blow the whistle, another several seconds would have run off.

He isn't close to the speed of Kampf. Which you need for a 4th line shutdown role. Entwistle's size may be better utilized as a wing.

Meh. The PI on Jackson to nullify the TD was iffy at best. EJ has a right to break on the ball. Also, the 2nd INT by the Giants should have been called PI on the Giants. Guy never looked for the ball. Can't do that in the NFL.

Theo

I saw Elbows comment comparing Kampf to Johnson per skating speed. He has a valid point in that Kampf is fast and Johnson just pedestrian.

I love when a roster has a couple of players who never forget what it takes each night out. Johnson i envision as tough as nails to play against. Solid defense and can chip in with some goals. But although good in face off maybe he has tonplay RW in the NHL. I suspect eventually that Johnson and Entehistle could be unsung 4th line mainstays. Along with Barret on a #2 or #3 line. We need other bottom line forwards to be fast and willing to cycle puck on boards. If we are to be competitive in playoffs then we need those players on bottom lines.

The one I will never forget was post expansion to 12 teams and Gump World was then with the North Star..if bumper HAD a mask by this time I dont remember it being on....Bobby worked his way through the North Stars defense but the lane to go to middle wasn't opening so he continued towards the end around red line and let this shot go that hit Gumper with this shot in what looked like his temple (I was sittng in the mezzanine section behind the net.)

Gumper had no reaction...not reflexive abrupt movementout like alt. he got hit, and and as stiff as tree trunk, he fell, timber, into the goalmouth, out like a light.
I think Caesare Manitiago replaced him

Gumper did start wearing mask after that.

I NEVER saw such cold knock out from a shot puck like that one...

yeah both did..Ed Gicoacmin always maybe, Crozier later.

I remember being at a playoff game and they announced the Red Wings and Blackhawk line ups, and then announced the emergency goalie for both teams...was Roger Crozier.

I know the Norris family owned both franchises, and were cheap, but I dunno...I was young and that was when I start to be student of who teams owned, because I wasn't sure for a time just who had Crozier's right because he was our back-up too.

Back then, wasn’t there one goalie in the stands who could play for either team - teams only dressed one goalie, IIRC?

The Gump was the best. When he played with the Rangers his orders were no beers. After the game the Rags sent personel out checking taverns looking to catch Gumper drinking. But they never checked the bar right across the street from the garden where he would just pound away.

Don't be- The Wirtz family and the James Norris family shared in the Blackhawks ownership.

At one Pointv in the six team NHL the Norris family owned Madison Square Garden, the Red Wings (Bruce Norris) and James the blacks hawks

My understanding is the Worst family becomes intertwined with the James Norris family through Boxing venues.
From Wikipedia:
ames Dougan Norris (November 6, 1906 – February 25, 1966) was an American sports businessman, with interests in boxing, ice hockey, and horse racing. He was the son of James E. Norris (whom the James Norris Memorial Trophy is named after) and half-brother of Bruce Norris and Marguerite Norris. A member of the Hockey Hall of Fame.

Born in Chicago, Norris served as a lieutenant with the United States Navy during World War II.[1] In business, he was a partner in the commodity brokerage firm, Norris and Kenly, and became involved in hockey by working for his father, who bought the Detroit Red Wings in 1932. In 1946, James D. Norris was one of a group that purchased the Chicago Blackhawks along with Bill Tobin (left Chicago Blackhawks in 1954) and Arthur M. Wirtz Sr. However, he remained a Vice President with the Detroit Red Wings until the summer of 1952. That summer He left to help Arthur M. Wirtz Sr. run the Chicago Black Hawks. In 1957, James Norris along with his half brother Bruce Norris and other NHL owners of the time, were accused of union busting activities related to the attempt by Ted Lindsay and a group of NHL players to form an NHL Players Association. Mr. Norris's role in those affairs are dramatized in the movie, Net Worth.

The Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup in 1961, with Norris as chairman. Norris was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1962.

Norris's father passed along several of the family's businesses to him in the late 1940s, including a significant ownership position in Norris Grain Company and Madison Square Garden.

Norris was president of the International Boxing Club of New York from 1949 to 1958. The IBC dominated boxing in the U.S. in the 1950s, but was dissolved by the courts, which ruled it to be a monopoly. As president of the IBC, Norris was involved with organized crime figures. Norris was responsible for fixing numerous bouts. Besides match fixing, he was also unofficially managing many boxers (usually against their will) and persuading them to hire his associates as advisors.[2]

Among his investments, James Norris held interests in the Rock Island Railroad, the Chicago Furniture Mart, and Chicago's Bismarck Hotel. Norris owned thoroughbred racehorses as well as Spring Hill Farm in Paris, Kentucky. His horses raced in the United States and in Canada where his colt, Rocky Royale, won the 1960 Canadian International Stakes. In 1938 his horse Danger Point, ridden by Eddie Arcaro, won the Metropolitan Handicap.

Like his father, Norris suffered from heart problems and had two heart attacks. He died in Chicago in 1966 at age 59, with a reported net worth of $250 million. Shortly before his death, Norris had arranged for an NHL franchise to be awarded to St. Louis, Missouri, even though no one from St. Louis applied for a franchise. Norris owned the St. Louis Arena.
