I might move clemmensen up to the next group for that one season Brodeur was injured. He was rock solid in net and helped them make the playoffs. And I still think they should have kept him in net in the first round when Marty came back. - shvingter88

It always seemed to me like Schneider was always in the wrong spot at the wrong time.
He might honestly have been one of the best goalies in the world while he was in Vancouver, but was stuck behind Luongo.
He goes to New Jersey, has to awkwardly take the reins from a shell-of-his-former-self legend on a shell-of-its-former self team. Not exactly the easiest shoes to fill to say the least.
Performance level dropped significantly right around turning 30, most likely as a result of injury. Hasn't looked the same since.
I always felt like if Schneider had gotten the No. 1 job in Vancouver early, or maybe if he had been drafted by, say, San Jose and wound up being their starter for most of the 2010s instead of Niemi, he might have 300+ wins and a Cup. But the opportunity was just never really there.
Obviously impossible to prove a counterfactual, but it seems like a goalie with his talent level probably deserved better. |

Well at least he got paid. There is that.

The only thing that annoys me about Cory is that it led to marty brodeur leaving and not playing his whole career with nj ugh..other than that I have sympathy for Cory or any other goalie the devils have had for the last 4 or 5 years..its clear the devils forwards have been outplayed and outshot almost every game so it can't be easy being a goalie for this team..add in the below average defense (putting it lightly) and its no wonder most goalies struggle for them even Blackwood struggles at times like the beginning of last year |

38 years ago today, (9.17.82) the NJ Devils won their first ever hockey game against the Washington Capitals in their road exhibition debut. It was a 3-1 win and the first goal was scored by Devil Randy Pierce.
For the regular season the Devils would open with a tie against the Penguins with the first regular season goal scored by Don Lever. They then got their first official win by beating the Rangers. In their third game they came back from a 5-1 deficit to tie the Toronto Maple leafs! Luck ran out against the Montreal Canadiens who handed the Devils their first official loss.... - Queenie_5_hole
Thanks for the trip down memory lane |

I just want to understand the head hunting comment. Stevens in the playoffs? - Queenie_5_hole
He didn't head hunt, they left themselves exposed |

You gotta give Scott Clemenson a lot more credit. He stepped in big time during Marty's injury season.
My top 3:
1) Marty
2) Cory - The year we just missed the playoffs with Marty/ Cory as the tandem. If Cory got the bulk of the games we make the playoffs that year. I think we had like 12 shoot out losses as well.
3) Scott Clemenson

Chris Terreri was a better backup, starter, and playoff goalie then Clemmensen. Just saying. |

You saw the trap? The head hunting? The ellias is my best forward years?
I’m so sorry. - ChrisMS
It was the dead puck era. Every other team did a variation of these things, the Devs were just better at it. |

What does everyone think of possibly signing Trevor Van Riemsdyk of Carolina. UFA Defensemen from Jersey...would think we can get him at affordable price and would be better then Mueller or Carrick...a steady stay at home defender..thoughts? |

I know. I remember my first Devils game in 1982. Had 3rd row seats behind the goal. Each ticket cost $6.00. I am still hopeful they go back to our old school red/green uni's full time.
They had style! - Crushers68
I still have my jersey from that year. It was so cheaply made, got it a sporting good store in Dumont NJ. Loved wearing it. My sons laugh at it every time I break it out. |

Agreed but in today’s marketing day and age not sure that’s a full timer. Love seeing them on the ice though.
How about a slightly different variation with a darker green and darker red?
Or an all blacked out jersey, with a dark red logo silhouette and lines. |

Hischier no... but Zacha probably could lol, I bet he would get more points. Just pretend its a 5 on 5 penalty kill and he's good. |

As long as we keep future star Dakota Mermis what could go wrong? |

I'm at the point of not really caring. I like Severson, however, if we win the trade, then I'll take a won trade.. even if it leaves us with nothing on defense. We need to sign a dman or 2 anyway. Severson is a nice stabilizer on the back end, but again.. if we win the trade, or create a package to say... land both a Holtz and a Sanderson, then I think I'd be down for it.
It would be nice if we had even just 1 other competent defenseman back there, which is unlike any other team. Gosh just look at it. Severson, Subban, Butcher, Carrick, Mueller, Mermis.. Smith.. Reilly Walsh.. Subban is literally a bottom-pair dman. Severson is a 2nd pair guy. The rest are all bottom pair-AHL dmen. It's really remarkable honestly. |

The biggest problem with trading Severson is he actually fits the age group pretty well. So it's not like giving up PK who isn't going to be helping when the core forwards are hitting their prime. BUT that said, I totally hear you on this. IF there was a big return on Severson then it's worth considering. But I think at this point you need to get an NHLer back and not a pick/prospect. |

For some reason there is this really vocal group of fans who just hate Severson regardless of how he plays. Same with Butcher. Our defense needs work but you don't get a better defense by just giving away your players for free. |

We need to keep a few guys that can throw a hit.

It was a good payback play from Severson but he doesn’t hit much. Just saying.
That said I wouldn’t trade him unless the return was sensational. |
