LeBrun just put out an article on Staal among other topics. Said's Staal's NTC was all playoff contenders who were looking for centers and that he had turned down several possible trades and taken a steep discount because he really didn't want to move.

The coach spent some time with him in Washington and likes Mojo as a fit so that played in along with Guerin wanting to shake up a room that had become to comfortable.

My bet would be this ends similar to Shero and Bylsma after another disappointing playoff exit.

He made a list to try and buck being traded and it backfired. Id say he'd rather be on a contender now than the Sabres. Oh well Eric, you win some, you lose some.

And sadly it's a year too late and another year of the "window" gone.

So the Pens needed Staal for when their final cup window slams shut he can walk off into the sunset with Crosby and Malkin?

Needed? Not him specifically, but he was a great option for the Pens, but it looks like Staal probably nixed a trade here.

I think I know what JRs big move is going to be... hes bringing back Phil Kessel!

Tanev-McCann-Kessel
Poulin-Blueger-Hornquist

Ignore the unlikely hood the Pens could pull it off cap and asset wise, that looks like like a glorious lineup.

Honestly, under normal circumstances I would be fine with him on his natural side in a 3rd line role, but because of the other characters on that line I'm not a fan.

Haha yea right. Wouldnt even want Kessel back anyway. There's 5-6 wingers in FA I'd rather have and cost 0 assets.

If we were going the trade route, which could happen if we plan to keep McCann at center, I'd look into someone like Palmieri or Anderson.

Yeah, apparently Staal had even floated out he might retire if traded. But the guy who traded for him was his teammate when they won the Cup so he doesn't want to screw him over on his first trade.

Agreed, BillyG will move Mojo at the deadline for an asset. He knew he’d get blocked by Staal and end up getting nothing

Exactly

He should be told to shop around and come back for a firm and fair offer

Teams that just give players a blank check tend not to fair well

Imagine had we maxed out Crosby and then Malkin would have wanted the same. Might be short a couple of cups, but at least they would have been in their prime

I def think the way to go forward with the lack of centre options is to resign McCann and try and upgrade his wingers.

I still see no reason to trade McCann unless it's as part of package with murray for a top notch 3C

I think it's more a fit issue. Judging JR's comments since the early exit, they no longer consider him a possibility for the 3c (which I agree). The Pens don't want to spend 3.5 mil on another bottom 6 wing. 3.5 for Tanev. 5.3 for Hornie. I'm sure they'd like to keep him, but with a flat cap he's a luxury they probably can't afford.

If they trade McCann, which I am against, they will need to spend money and/or assets on both a 3C and a 3LW.

The money spent on Tanev and Horny is sunk costs and shouldn't figure into the decision on what to spend to fill the roster.

Hopefully JR has learned his lesson from the Shearleau debacle and won't repeat that. Kahun would be a perfect cheap, scoring 3LW right about now. But if we cheap out now with bargain bin shopping as JR likes to do, we'll be back to the same top-heavy roster problem. Guys like Tanev, Simon, ZAR, Lafferty and Blueger can't be relied upon to provide scoring. Horny might not score as much as he gets older.

We need to go big if we want to compete. Sub-$3.5M wingers and centers in FA aren't going to get it done. Also why Staal at $3.25M would have been perfect. Maybe now that Staal has been traded to BUF he would be open to being traded here. BUF needs a goalie and I'm pretty sure they would be interested in McCann.

I'm just going by JR's comments. I think McCaan is gone and he'll probably bring back Simon. I think they'll spend money on 3c.....whether trade or FA. They'll probably add a bottom pair RD too.

I think it would be foolish to throw money at this year's crop of FA centers, so hopefully it's a trade, but I know that goes against what JR said. What the hell is going on in that head of his? Maybe he's going big with a 3LW, putting Blueger at 3C, and then getting some cheap rando to play 4C.

It would be nice to know if Maniscalco can handle 3RD before JR gets a chance to overpay for that position, because you know he wants to.

This exactly. Why go out and get an expensive 3C if you're just going to play him with Hornqvist and Simon? Hornqvist is generally not a big ES scorer and we all know about Simon. Even if he's not the 3C, it makes sense to keep McCann if you want that line to be dangerous.
