What about Jarry for Staal?

Why would you trade your starting goalie for a 36 year old center? That's a ridiculously dumb trade offer...

This past year McCann scored at a 2.0 P/60 rate and Staal scored at 2.1 at even strength. Fairly comparable actually. If Staal kept to the same rate he would have sufficed given that he can actually play the center position.
- Victoro311

1) McCann played C all year and had that production, so we have a fundamental disagreement about if he can play center.

2) Staal had much better wings than McCann. Even when McCann saw some 2C time, it wasn't with any top 6 wings.

Hey at that price I'd take a chance on Staal, I just don't expect great results. Almost everyone wants to get rid of Hornqvist because they fear him falling off and Staal is 3 years older. He's absolutely lost a couple steps. Let's see him put up those numbers with Hornqvist and Simon. Oh and JJ as his second most common defenseman.

I’m with some of those who said maybe JR has something up his sleeve. Yohe floated in the athletic today that Petterson is someone who could be dealt for a 3C.

This may be true, but what Buff needs more than anything this year is a legit 2C until we see what Cozens is capable of. If the Sabres rush Cozens (like they did Mittlestadt) then our future center depth is totally fried for years to come.

Also lookin' forward to seeing what Kahun can do with a decent center here.

- LandlordTom

I suppose. If I were GM, I would be looking to maximize a return on Staal before he hits FA and just fill the 2C with non-highly-rated-prospects from within or some random FA vet center.

So I looked into it and you're right. I thought McCann played a lot more wing this year, but he was mostly at C during the first half of the season when he was scoring at a good pace and his most common line mates were Kahun and Hornqvist. He actually slowed down when moved Wing and playing predominantly with Crosby and Simon during the second half of the season. I thought he played at wing way more.

Looking more and more like our best option at 3C is to keep McCann and give him better and consistent wingers. Man how (frank)ing stupid does that Kahun trade look? Kahun-McCann-Hornqvist was a good line.

Because this is the last year or two max of the window and there are a lot of good goalies available and next to no good centers available. Also, Jarry has never really been the starter, so he's not a sure thing.

Love that series! His, while interesting at times, I thought was the worst episode. He takes himself way too seriously. I loved the 85 year old pit master woman and the dude from South Carolina.

I just finished the second episode so I’ve only seen Tootsie and him. His food looks bangin though. I need to make another trip to Texas soon for Tootsies bbq.

Boy, you said it.

Starting to like the idea of targeting a top 6 LW to either bump Zucker down or play 3LW with McCann and Horny.

I have had a 3C boner for Staal since Bonino left, so if we don't get him (who was one of the only good centers likely available), then I would stick McCann back at 3C and go with plan B.

MoJo was deployed heavily in a defensive roll in Buf while Staal was given prime offensive deployment. I think this could work for both teams.

Adv Minny as best vase scenario, they get a top 6 forward they can keep in the fold longer term and worst case they flip him at the deadline and tank worse than if they had Staal.

Agree with all of this. Staal seemed perfect but oh well. Like Brassard it may not have worked out anyways. And the Pens could do worse than McCann with a couple top 6 caliber wings.

Do Pirates fans still follow the Pirates? Talk about an exercise in futility and just pure masochism.

You could copy and paste your statement every year for as long as Nutting is the owner.

Yup, I want to make a trip to Tootsie's and back to Terry Black's in Austin.

Dude's food looked good, but he was just taking himself so seriously. I was waiting for him to say he wants to make ice cream using fire.

First game I watched this year. Brubaker is a good pitcher, nothing special, but he is major league talent. That was all I saw.

He probably says no. And who's to say Guerin didn't like the return from Buffalo more?

I dunno man. He'll be available at the deadline again anyway.

- BINGO!

It's way too soon to say the bolded is true, but if the Sabres are solidly in the playoffs next year at the trade deadline, Staal won't be going anywhere.

They would be happy keeping him, making a run at the playoffs, and simply having his salary drop off their cap after the season.

I'm pretty sure RW has ridden MoJo's jock about how great a player he was in at least 1 article, something with a bunch of graphs

I remember people were arguing McCann wasn't a wing and needed to go back to center at that point because that's when his struggles started. Move back didn't help but as you pointed out he also lost his main wing. Doesn't excuse everything, but a bit of a scoring downgrade from Kahun to Simon or Marleau.

Yeah we could really have used Kahun. He and McCann did have good chemistry and I was expecting them to form one of those pairs Sully always talked about.
