there's more to that, if you compare numbers for his 5 on 5 play, his hockey IQ, consistency, etc.

he obviously isn't getting 7M, but why would he ask lower as a starting point, since the whole point of negotiating is getting down to a number both parties agree upon

habs will counter-offer with 3M lololol

I think 5.5MM for 5 years makes sense , anything above that is likely too much

it makes sense if you're the MB. not if you're Danault. that's the problem

I think you'll be disappointed.
ROR, another very good 2-way center, makes 7.5M. he had 12 goals.

Yes, and he has credibility and a cup so we can use that as leverage. He’s a top line not top line center on a team that doesn’t know where to use players. We got him for nothing, flip him for what we need. (frank) the good without the puck nonsense. We have Suzuki as our Bergeron

Maybe he will take a home town discount depending on what he sees with the team's improvement this off season. The question here becomes , is he able to make other players better ? I know he has been playing mostly with Tatar and Gallagher but who else did he played with ?

he mainly played with those 2, and they had their best numbers ever with him as a center.
I'm all for the hometown discount, but 1M+ is a hell of a discount.
We all wish for 5.5M, but it will be closer to 6.25M imo.
now will MB be okay with it or trade him? time will tell.
I just doubt he'll trade him, not if he wants to win soon, with Weber and Price. that would be sending a weird message.

yeah Suzuki will be good. he's not there yet though, far from it.
how much do you think Danault could get on the open market as a UFA?
5M? 6M? 7M?
pretty sure there's a GM out there ready to give him a big fat contract.
though decision for him, staying home or leaving.

I would argue Gallagher and Tatar makes Danault a better player, Danault is good, but Gallagher injured his hands two times and he had similar numbers the year before he got injured , as for Tatar , he had similar numbers in Detroit . He is good , but likely max $6MM AAV good

Duchene got $8m a year for 7 years, last ufa, for reference

well, you don't pay him that if you plan on using him on the third line.

And looking by the end of the playoffs, this is the direction of the team.

he was still the most used forward, so 1st 2nd or 3rd... not sure it makes a difference.

He will get what they’re willing to give him. I think he’s our most valuable trade chip. Domi is valuable for a C spot but Danault has more value IMHO. I’d play the market and see what you can get for both Danault and/or Domi. Trade them both of it means progress.....or trade the most valuable or who seems the individual most valuable???

5M is the going rate for a good #3C. look around the league.
problem is Danault has really strong arguments saying he's a #2C. then the going rate is more like 7M+.
I know we all want him on the 3rd line, but put yourself in his shoes. why would he settle for 5? to stay home to see mom and dad more often?
either they come halfway (6.25M is my bet) either he'll play elsewhere. imo.
