It’s not easy anymore with the new equipment. That equipment is designed to self collapse into the butterfly style (even if you can’t do a wide butterfly it helps those with less flexible knees) and not easily conducive to the Billy Ranford or Grant Fuhr two pad stack.

Pretty much. The equipment now is just made to help stop pucks not make saves

Me too! I still did it with the new equipment. Couldn’t help it. But try getting back to your feet with all of that loose (frank)ing equipment flopping everywhere afterwards!! Holy (frank)!! It’s like your paralyzed!

Yep, just making everyone play the same boring style. No individuality anymore. Just get in the way and worry about the rebounds later.

when i see how loose the straps are nowadays i'm always like "how?" but i guess the channel is just so deep now and with that big inside flap of padding you're still pretty protected and all even though your leg just rolls around in there.

I laugh when companies say they have a butterfly set and hybrid set. (frank) off they're the same pads

I think ccm's next pads are completly removing the thigh strap.

Add that to the boot strap almost being gone nowadays

Yeah the pad your knees land on (inside protection) is like paradise compared to the old days when I took Chris Pronger slap shots off the top of my knees (upper knee protection) because the old Heaton Pro90 Z didn’t have knee protectors or thick inside leg protection!! That’s why I’m riddle with old injuries! Goalie gear went through a phase where it was lagging with the advent of better sticks and a faster game for sure!

my first set of ice hockey pads (only set actually, i borrowed them for my one and only foray out of deck hockey and into an actual rink) were someone's old fashioned tan pads with stuffing you could see on the sides. the brand started with a K, but i can't remember it.

now your leg is protected almost all the way around. you really only have to worry about a skate to the back of your calf when you go down and cover up a puck. you'd have to be hasek to actually get hit there with a shot.

For sure!! Seems the only place a goalie is still susceptible to injury is their head and collar bone.
