Timing is everything isn’t it? We were just getting by most of our lives. Then in 2003 we sold everything and moved to Edmonton. We bought a new house 05 and sold it two years later and pocketed $250,000.
When I got the cheque from the lawyer I was literally dancing down Jasper Ave. My wife said I looked like George Costanza when his wedding got postponed. - shack67
I've made 500K profit thus on a pretty small house I bought in Pickering in 2009. It's nice. I wish I wasn't so poor ta the time or I'd have a house worth over a million.

Any market where people take mortgages based on 2 salaries, prices are inflated.
(There was a discussion before on quality of life, working pressure etc - a simple measure would be to only permit mortgages based on 1 salary; better for parents, better for kids, better for family as a whole - only worse for banks, governments (taxes) and developers, obviously - MaximusAurelius
And this is why you don't let pretend doctors have any control over your life whatsoever.

We were really hurting when we bought that house. Second marriage but first house for both of us and as bad as it was, it would have been even harder later. Yard was pole shaped, 9 feet across at the back, just barely enough room to get car into cars port. Moved out to double lot on ravine to house where we didn't have nearly enough furniture.
Still miss Toronto though (in non pandemic times) - Canada Cup
My parents bought their first house in the early-mid 1960s. Paid (iirc) $19,800 - and my dad still tells the story how he was pressured into it by my mom - he never thought they could afford it. He thought they were ruined.
They actually looked at houses a few streets away - slightly larger houses, but they were $22,000 - it simply wasn't feasible. |

In the late 1990s, my wife and I were living in a giant house in the Annex that had been chopped up into five different apartments.
While we were living there, it went up for sale: $700,000.
It's got to be worth at least $4,000,000 now - and that's a conservative estimate.

For sure, his fall from grace, or significance rather, started before the Auston Matthews Covid stuff.. Even before Dubas was hired - PatC80
The most embarrassingly bad article ever written was the garbage about Kessel, where not even a single word of it was correct.
Simmons is, and always has been, a (frank)ing goof. The sooner he is gone, the better. |

I don't want to sound like the Monty Python skit but different eras. My parents were married in 1930. They built their house with wood that someone used to pay my dad for representing him in court. |

This housing market talk is depressing.
For the record, buy a home for your family, invest the rest. Don't buy a second home. |

I just checked prices of houses from street Roncesvalles area where we lived. For longest time I was sure we couldn't afford to move back. Our house here worth more now. Yeah, we win. |

This house is the first house we looked at when we were moving. We looked at 3 others after. The price came down in the meantime and it's just been home. |

My grandfather was a carpenter - he built his house in Riverdale (where my parents grew up).
Here's my dad's favourite story:
When they were building "New City Hall" my grandfather cut a deal with the cement truck guys. Whenever a truck's cement was deemed not high enough quality, instead of it going to be dumped at the Leslie Street Spit, it was diverted to my grandfather's house - where he laid a cement driveway that my dad described as "at least a foot deep."
My dad always laughed about how some yuppie probably bought the house, decided to upgrade the driveway to interlocking stone, and ended up spending $1 million just to get all the concrete excavated.
Damn, I may have to take a little drive and see the driveway. I don't think I've seen the house in 45 years. |

We regularly search for properties in Simcoe/Kawartha and around Kelowna just to see what we could actually own for what we paid. |

Right around the part where you said that mortgages should only be permitted based upon one salary. - Atomic Wedgie yes because it's a great idea everyone gets the same house at double the price?
And families have to depend on social tax breaks for childcare / daycare or other ways, because they cannot reduce their working hours in order to combine with having a family?
Never said a woman should stop working - I said the mortgage should not be based on two (full, adding that here for clarification) salaries |
