For fun...

Could they retain $1M in salary for the next two seasons in a trade with Ottawa, who would then get a $5M cap hit “for free” for 2020-2021 and only have $3M owing for the final season (or a $2M buyout)?

Sens get “an NHL player” for no cost next year, a $5M boost up to the cap floor, and the ‘Nucks get the offsetting $5M cap savings (I presume the $1M real money retained counts against the cap?).

Yes. But the $ trades work better for LTIR players who never have to join the room.

Sure...Leafs used that strategy.

Just seems like this year’s bonus already being paid, leaving only $1M of real money owing to LE for this coming season, might create an inexpensive way for the Canucks (too much) and Sens (too little) to each address a cap problem. Maybe add some other prospects or players each way to dress it up (Virtanen for a prospect & a pick)?

Its possible. Like I said if Sens say no then what?

I am hoping Benning gets creative as far as filling rosters. I don't want the safe route because they are familiar.

If they are looking at 6 mil for Marky 5 mil for Toffoli I hope they are looking at cash strapped teams to do some poaching. I hope they get a young RHD and look at Tanev as option 2 .

Then...
Arizona, but the price paid goes up ($, prospects, players)
Or Florida, but the price is even higher
At some point, Utica, because it is the only remaining option to reduce the cap hit, or because LE won’t waive his MNTC

I’m doubtful about an MTA, as good as that would be for the team, as that it hasn’t appeared to work out for the (small sample size) players who have chosen that route. As a group, they appear to not find other opportunities to play in the NHL, which makes it less attractive for players. The Luongo approach (retire, become paid consultant) seems more practical for both parties.

EDIT: Scratch Arizona, they have their own cap problems
Maybe Buffalo...

Sabers have to sign 15 guys and Panthers 12 for less then half Sabers cap space. You think they are wasting so much on 1 bottom six guy?

Depends what that young RHD costs to afford Tanev.

I would take Eriksson in Detroit IF Demko was coming with him to take on that cap dump. Wings have the cap space and need a young goalie.

I’m not sure if there’s 8 million or 5 million left on his contract, depending on when his bonus was/is paid for next season, but there’s less than zero chance he walks away from even 5 million dollars.

If he managed to get another NHL deal following a mutual termination agreement it would be a one year league minimum deal, he’s not walking away from millions of guaranteed money.

Aren't you the same guy who said the Canucks would never get a recapture deal over the Luongo contract?
I do agree though, Loui will look good in an Ottawa Jersey along with Jake or whatever is the sweetener.
I mentioned this about 3 weeksl a ago, but it got zero traction on this board, until it was brought up by someone else 2 weeks later.

i've suggested the same thing too. it's not that novel a concept

Still don't see it happening, but it would be nice.

Markstrom's groin injuries are an issue too. 6 mil for a goalie who might be injury-prone would suck lol

Leave Marky's groin out of it. 😁

It's a pretty common injury for Goalies. Not just Marky. Every Goalie has dealt with a few.

I hope they use common sense. Benning said yesterday on TSN Demko is our goalie of the future. Don't get into a long term expensive contract with Markstrom. Benning also said Markstrom has earned the right to test the open market.

Loui for Fluery retain 2 mil per year on Loui.
