Agree but is JC the right guy for the job?
- Scott1977

If development at the NHL level is a high priority, sure but think Colliton was more fit to be the head coach in Rockford where a lot of development should be taking place.

Perhaps the goal is to run off some high priced veterans by having them ask out, instead of the team taking the PR hit for breaking up the old core?

Maybe but that is a reach imo.

If you are disappointed that are first round pick is at #17 and it means tier one top prospects are gone, then would you surrender our #2 just to exchange a few spots up in round one?

Long term implication is that the #1 from moving up could become a top line player. Not so likely at #17 or second round.

Wonder if wiz would say no, keep both picks

Couturier wins the Selke by a landslide (117 1st place votes, 2nd place was Bergeron with 21).

I remember reading a draft profile of Connor Zary and his comparable was Couturier. Zary is in the 17th range.

The ones I read said he models his game after Horvat.

Hawks aren't getting into tier one level.

Or is JC the A to B guy - the guy who helps the young players progress - isn’t working with development supposedly his strength) - but then they will need the B to C(up) guy?

Yeah, Rockford - but finances say many of the young prospects may be in the Show sooner than usual.

Is that one reason why they may be looking at a “bridge” deal for him, knowing (or sensing) that?

I’m missing the ‘development’ aspect of JC’s coaching. Some have progressed (Dach, Kubalik), some have regressed (DCat, Strome) some have gone sideways (Boqvist).

At the same time, the defense remains awful, the offense is middle of the pack, and they remain the 6th or 7th best team in the Central.

Exactly when will we be seeing this ‘progress’?

My take is prior to this season (i.e. before Dach and Boqvist), the team had been in neutral since the 2017 playoffs.

Today and moving ahead, though, I would agree that they have more to look forward to compared to other teams like the Wings.

That's not to say there will be total resurrection to greatness in a few years but the Hawks are definitely in a better spot to grow and keep growing.

- Theo Fox

Agreed! Well said. I’d add Kubalik too. Hawks have legit pieces that can develop. Top pairing D and top 6 centers are what the Wings haven’t been able to develop. Hawks are in solid shape to accomplish that.

When you read a variety of draft profiles on the same prospect, sometimes there's consistency in comparables and sometimes they can be all over the map.

Either way with Zary, I'd be over the moon if he got close to or even matched the play of Couturier or Horvat.

Speaking of draft prospects, I believe it was you and maybe EbonyRaptor or others who are high on Marat Khusnutdinov. He's getting a lot of praise lately so his stock is rising.

Not sure if that's the strategy with Colliton but what you described makes sense to me as a plausible perspective.

Walrus blew both goals. The 2nd the guy had time and space and that's on the D, but he shot it right at him and it went through.

While I do agree Colliton hasn't moved the needle significantly with the team, he does mesh well with the younger players and had a good track record with development in Rockford.

I'm still putting my thoughts together for the season review blog on coaches due out next Wednesday but some of it does focus on Colliton being a pretty decent developmental coach but so far not a really good tactical coach.

Yeah, I jumped on the Khusnutdinov bandwagon a couple weeks ago. A really dynamic player all over the ice with the lone negative of he's only 5'9" / 165. Watching tons of highlights and some game action shows he plays bigger than 5'9" - he is a feisty player that doesn't shy away from the physical part of the game - kind of reminds me of DCat in that regard except he skates better and doesn't have DCat's elite shot.

Stars win. They're looking good.

Here's a thought, if the Knights do not win the cup this year:

Patrick Kane (25% salary retained) to VGK
Alex Tuch, Cody Glass (or Krebs if injuries are a concern) and a first round pick to CHI.

Looks like they have about $5M in space after this season and most of their team signed.

Kane @ $7.5M

Tuch is $4.75 and Glass is entry. Tuch had an off year this year, but looks like his playoffs are looking better than the regular season. Had 52 points previous full season.
