Fletch is going to have to eat some salary and add a pick and prospect to unload JVR.
If Fletch can free up around 5 million that’s a help.
The flyers also have Sandin who can compete for a roster spot this upcoming year. He’s 24 years old so he should be able to make a good case for himself as a third line player.
I wouldn’t be surprised if Frost doesn’t make the flyers opening day roster.
He has the tools I’m just not convinced he’s ready.
I can see Braun and Ghost gone. Friedman can step as an alternate to Haag.

- bird_dog_pa

Yeah, I very selfishly wished to spy a look at Frost in the bubble, but he never played. You could be right that he doesn’t make the roster out of camp. Sandin is a possibility and Laczynski...Bunnaman needs to work in the offseason because there is some healthy competition coming.

How about Mitch Marner for MJL and a bag of pucks?
- Tomahawk

Think they might send Tanner back the other way and in that case it’s a no for me dog

I can deal with Haag but they need a partner with plus skating and passing to help him. Haag is what he is at this point.

I said this before and I am not making excuses but all of Coots, G and Jake had life going on during the lockdown. There are 4 big things in life, Birth of kids, marriage, buying a home and death. I HOPE this was a distraction along with the uncertainty of Covid. Just maybe G and Jake and especially G come back next season and have 1 more great season in them. I don't think G just turned into the player we saw after COVID. True it could be the game got faster on him and Jake. For better or worse i think we go into the season with G for sure and most likely with Jake. I agree with our young folks need to hit the gym put on muscle and come back better. They need to get lucky with Patrick, Frost and one of Allison or Ratcliffe. If they can unload JVR then maybe find a sniper. There are other teams like the Jets who need to retool, teams that will make cap moves, there should be some trade partners out there. This is the season Fletcher needs to make the moves to make this team better for next years playoffs.

Main issue I saw was that their unit cohesion would break too easily.

Defensively, they'd chase pucks a bit too aggressively, leaving huge open areas unmanned. Myers, in his youthful exuberance, was particularly prone to doing this in the PO's. While they were good at mostly keeping the play to the outside, they had a lot of trouble preventing cross-ice, cross-crease and backdoor plays. Any kind of movement would send them scrambling.

In the neutral zone, they were extremely prone to moving up the ice as individuals, and over-relying on the drop passes or sling shots. And wtf was up with all those aerial flips and dumps? I remember John Stevens joking about an "aerial attack" back in the day... maybe AV found his notes or something. They really have to figure out a better way to get from blueline to blueline, with tightened gaps and less reliance on stretch passing and individual plays.

There is enough talent on the team to succeed. They just need to get their team game on solid ground and exorcise some of their worst habits as a club.

I agree with the first point. I also saw real fear of the Isles forwards beating them off the boards or in open ice down low, which would lead to our forwards starting to creep towards our own end. Thus, when the puck was passed back to the point, there would be a ridiculous amount of space for their D to take a shot.

The aerial attack was an admission of defeat. They just could not deal with the forecheck and get a breakout of any sort. So, they alternated with predictable soft dump-ins and that aerial gimmick (where they hoped that they did not get too much on it for an icing or too little to lead to the sort of turnover we saw by Myers).

I think the idea is that all these young guys pick up the slack and there is a bit of a transition from the old guard to the new. As well as the Coots/Hayes of the team. That’s not a bad 1-2 punch to go with. If a Frost/Patrick can step in and be a viable 3C we are not in bad shape.
- ClaudeFather

I don’t think the gap between Couturier and Hayes is that wide. Couturier is clearly better but I’d like to see a star stud center and become a legitimate threat every night and a top ten scorer in the league.

I think they can do better though I fully expect him back. Him and Friedman assuming ghost is moved.

If the opportunity to reach the pinnacle of your own profession is not one of them, then they should go get a job as a dog-walker.

How far we have come. Just over a decade ago, our captain played through the playoffs with TWO badly separated shoulders without a single complaint.

I am old enough to remember when Ronnie Lott had a broken finger amputated so that he could play in the NFL playoffs.

Michael Jordan delivered a famous performance against Utah when he had the flu. I remember Howie Long mocking Bruce Smith because he had 103 fever and could not play in the playoffs.

Jeez.

Was never going to be an NHL player, even before the injuries. A complete waste of a first round pick. Seeing some of the players drafted after him tough to swallow.

We’ll see. I am really big on Zamula. I will also continue to root for Morin to regain his NHL skating. Hägg is nice with the right partner in the 3rd pair, and good depth and insurance while we see what some of these other d-men can bring.

Morin Just needs to get on the ice at any level at this point or get the reps. He will be waived at some point to get to the ahl or maybe they loan him out to Europe? Either way makes no sense to keep him in the flyers roster and sit

yes that was then and this is now. I am not saying it is right or it is intentional but it it life. A G without wife, kids etc is all hockey, as we age we lose our invincible feeling.

Idk, Coots is a beast. Wasn’t his best playoff performance but this guy is gonna win the Selke and still puts up points year in and year out.

Marner for Sanheim and a NAK. Take it or leave it. I suspect you’ll leave it. We don’t want Nylander.

Take it from us Flyers fans, have fun trying to trade for quality defense at a fair price lol.

I just read that Backstrom and Letang also suffer from migraines. So maybe there is hope for Patrick.

I know the preventive medicine works for some but not all and I dont know if you can take imitrex and play a sport like hockey.

I hope the flyers take a look at some UFAs like Barrie and Granlund. Hell if Carolina doesnt resign Vatanan I'd take a shot at him as well.

If they cant move any salary it will be tough to add much but even adding Hoffman for a few years would help if they cant move Giroux and company.

There is one clear thing the club can do which would significantly alter their long term fortunes. To do that, it would first take a clear eyed acceptance of the fairly obvious fact that this is not a contending team in the near future.

Once that is recognized, try to avoid the Giroux situation in 13-14. Yes, great player at the time his contract was going to be up, but was he really a part of a future contending team? He would have bought a king's ransom for a rebuild, but they chose to sign him and Voracek the next year to meaningless long-term contracts.

I am speaking, of course, of Couturier. He will win the Selke this year, and is at the prime of his career. He too would bring back a ton in terms of young talent. There are however some danger signs regarding him.

First, dude has played tough minutes since 18. Second, multiple injuries which could start taking a toll. Third, poor playoff performer save for 2 games against Pens (4 goals in 37 games over 8 years). Four, he will ask for 8-9 million in 2 years time and 7-8 years. 5. What I said before: is his peaking really at the correct time for us to consider keeping him?

Look for teams who could have a realistic run ahead in the next 2-3 years and need a Selke type. I am thinking of Canucks, AVs, Capitals....

EDIT: I also know that the club would never consider that. Too radical, and neither would the fanbase, which likely means we will be having this same conversation 5 years from now, just like we have had for the past 25 years.

Hopefully they figure out a plan for him. I just can’t help but root for him and in the playoffs there is a real need for one of his type. I’m confident he could move Lee.

They think they can get defense for Nylander. If only the Flyers thought of that before embarking on a 5 year defense rebuild
