So they signed Kovalchuk to league minimum, got some excitement out of him and then did him a solid by sending him to Caps for a 3rd.
After that they sent Scandella to Blues for a 2nd and a 4th.
So it seems it was:
Scandella + 3rd for Allen +2nd+4th
Maybe after fleecing (strong words but a 2 and 4?) them on Scandella, maybe throwing them a bone on the Allen trade pays off later.
Let's face it a 3rd seems a lot but they still have plenty of picks (6 I believe before STL picks that 3rd)

The best part of this trade is that Tanner isn't here to talk about it.

When the talking heads hate the move, you know it is a solid move.

I like this move for both sides. Habs are going to need a better back up as CP gets older/until primeau is ready. The blues free up some cap space to resign pietro, something which also benefits the habs as well if it keeps him out of the division.

I’ve been away for a few days and noticed that there’s none of his blogs on the site. Did he finally get canned?

St Louis has always surprised me with how they will ship out important players from their lineup and still stay competitive.
- mgriffen

They will make the playoffs with a mediocre backup, and Binner will start all the important games. This was an A+ move from Stl who is now closer to retaining Pietrangelo. I don't know what I am missing, but I did not have Mtl as a playoff team, and thought their cap space would have been better used absorbing a bad contract paired with a high pick or prospect. If they make playoffs, Price will be starting every game so I am a little confused about this 15M duo..... Teams are going to be DESPERATE to shed bad contracts and Blues jumped on this opening before trade partners disappeared.

I love that argument from some Habs fans about too many picks and not enough contracts because of the limit. Like every pick in a draft is worth a contract. More picks just means more chances at maybe getting someone that is worth giving a contract to down the road. Also depends on which league you draft those players from and how much time you need to sign them before you lose their rights.

Good riddance. I’m surprised it didn’t happen a year or two ago. With all the writers here now incorporating analytics into their blogs he lost his niche on the site. I’m honestly shocked that ek let it go on considering the debate/conversation that all those other writers created in their blogs is generally healthy while all of tanners were completely toxic. As an employer I don’t know how you go that long allowing that to be part of your brand.

Did Todd Cordell EVER said something nice or positive about the Habs?

I really can't remember.

Habs have close to 13M available next season with only Domi and Mete to resign.

The money isn't a problem. Never was.

Habs filled a need, paid a small price, especially considering the number of picks they still have... St-Louis gets the cap space they needed.

Win/win.

Fans of others teams have no clue about mtl cap situation, or their problem getting that back up. It's been a while and the UFA market has not been a solution. Goalies don't want to come here, because Price gets so much action.

They basically gave the blues a free 3rd for one year of a subpar, expensive, back-up goalie. It’s cute that Bergy thinks that his team is magically good and competitive now after winning one Bo5 series

Actually i would say it's the first thing they should talk about. They have good young forward and defensemen. I'm thinking they end up with Askarov in the draft.

I don't get the overreaction to this trade, yes Bergevin gave a 3rd round pick to a cap crunched team but had he signed one of the many backups in free agency that goalie is probably looking for a multi year deal so just eating up future cap when the hope is Primeau has arrived.

If he doesn't sign one of the better ufa goalies like Greiss,Talbot, Khudobin who will surely want a two year or longer deal the other goalies looking at a one year deal like say Smith, Brossoit, Elliott are pretty big question marks and he might be regretting signing them if they can't perform and then he's getting criticism for not addressing the backup goalie issue.

It could go either way, Allen does well and it's all good or he bombs and Bergevin looks dumb but in the end it's a 3rd round pick, the odds of that pick amounting to anything are slim and it'd be years before it amounts to anything anyway so is it try to be a better team now or three to four years or longer from now? Also with all the 2nd and 3rd round picks the Habs have amassed parting with one for a backup isn't a big deal.

I get thinking the Habs should of been compensated for taking Allen but if he waits and another GM sees the value in Allen only having one year remaining and trades for him then Bergevin is signing someone to a longer deal or someone of lesser quality and then the same talking heads would be criticizing him for that cause the backup with a two or three year deal is blocking Primeau from coming up.

I'm not a Bergevin or Habs fan for the record, just think the reaction to this trade is ridiculous.
