I don't get it. Why make the trade if not planning on re-signing him him? Unless that puts the Habs over some kind of hump for playoffs (it wont cuz he will be sitting on the bench) it was an odd deal.

If Habs do re-sign him then they will still be locked in at 15M+ for multiple years. There's no way Habs will be able to improve their scoring much when a good chunk of payroll is tied up in the G position.
