Good point. Forgot Barrie was a UFA. Was thinking he had one year left.

Kerfoot would be a decent 3C. I'm just afraid he would make minimal impact. I'd almost rather go with Hyman even though LW isnt a real need.

Calgary and Edmonton ...and even Carolina seem like better matches for a Murray deal. I'd take a shot at a guy like Warren Foegele. Not an impact player, per say, but he can fly and he's popped out to me in every canes game I've watched. If the Pens want to get back to a being a speedy/buzzsaw type of team... He'd fit the bill.

Some interesting names, especially if we add more from our side.

- YouMeAndDupuis9

I agree with your assessment. I would much rather have Hyman - McCann than McCann - Kerfoot. I doubt TOR is wanting to move Hyman as he is their 1LW. More likely they would move Johnsson if they were going to move a LW, but he is much less appealing to me. I also doubt CAR is wanting or willing to move Foegele. He fits their identity and LW is the one position that Carolina seems to be thin. Weren't they linked to a different goalie anyway?

I agree that CAL and EDM seem more likely. Sam Bennett and Derek Ryan are on the level of Kerfoot, IMO. I don't see any EDM forwards that make sense. If they are dumb enough to send us Klefbom or Nurse, then we should not hesitate. Their D had a pretty bad year so maybe they overreact and do something stupid.

Rumor has it JR has multiple offers currently on the table for one of our goalies, but he still doesn't feel it is enough to make a deal. He is looking for a big offer, but i have a feeling the price will keep going up if there is a bidding war.
- 123Kid

I'd be more encouraged if the offers were for "Murray" and not "one of our goalies". He better not trade Jarry.

They were just a go-between in a trade by Chicago and Vegas I think so Vegas could remain under the cap. I think Toronto picked up a 5th by retaining $1.1M.
- Hockey66

Gotcha, thanks. That's weird for a playoff cap team to do. Interesting..

I question if Toronto and Pittsburgh make good trade partners for a Murray trade. Unless it is for a 1st and a prospect. I think Toronto is going to work on a trade for a defenseman (especially if Pietrangelo is off the market) . So I dont see them selling off all their assets in a trade

I don't think Pietrangelo is hitting the market so agree with you there. It's still possible. Calgary and Edmonton seem most likely just because they aren't "hot spot" destinations for free agents. Minnesota is in the mix too.

I think they'll need to clear some mid-range contracts to fill out the defense and guys like Kerfoot and Johnsson seem like candidates if they can get ELCers to fill in. They're going to be a lopsided team with three $11M forward contracts and another at $7M.

Dang, I sort of glossed over that part. He'll definitely need someone else lined up if he's even thinking about trading Jarry.

If pietrangelo isn't re-signed... I wonder if he becomes the next "big time sexy free agent" that really doesn't pan out. Erik Karlsson...Suter... Parise

Like they're still good but the contact becomes an albatross or doesn't really fit the team or put them over the top

- YouMeAndDupuis9

Honestly, Pietrangelo is one of the few guys to potentially hit free agency that is worth throwing a ton of money at. You just don't see RH #1 defensemen ever. Usually the top guys just get over-hyped because we start talking about them a year out. Guys like Hoffman and Krug are my picks to disappoint in a couple years.

Feel like that's what happened with Parise. Youngish 30 goal wing was rare, but that wasn't an almost 100M guy. Karlsson they knew the injury risks but gambled because he was that good. Suter, I'll just disagree, the last few years will be bad, but the first decade of that deal he's been a stud.

I agree with this. The only thing better than a stud 1RD is 1C. The only caveat is that Pietrangelo turns 31 this year but I'd bet he'll be really good for at least the next 5 years.

Sure, I'll agree it will be too long. But if you're a contender now but missing that top D you should get him. Were it not for Marino's emergence, I'd be saying cut salary to try and sign this guy.

I still feel we should try to test the waters and sign him. I think he is a great player. Especially if JR is considering the thought of a Letang trade. It would definitely soften the blow. Plus to be honest if someone took Letang and JJ in a trade even if it were for a 2nd round pick (which we all know it would be more). It would still be an upgrade to the Defense (addition by subtraction with JJ).

To me, you have Jack Johnson, who I think had a decent year this year. He fits in as a nice third-pairing d-man.

Love it.

And move Letang to 2RD? I'd be all for trying to sign Pietrangelo but I've sort of put it out of my mind because it seems so highly unlikely.

Completely agree with this, but it seems like we had this convo a few days ago. Anyone taking Letang and JJ should just sign Pietrangelo instead. But, I guess Pietrangelo gets to decide where he goes, and chances are that's not the Pens. Sad face.

I assume he resigns with the blues, but if he hits the open market. Everyone will probably try to sign him. Same with Hall. Every team will throw a contract offer out there for Pietrangelo and Hall I would assume. Then the agents and players will narrow it down to teams they will play for and money wanted/offered.

Hopefully the Pens can be that last team standing for Pietrangelo. It would be nice to get some top players in free agency where we don't have to sell the farm for.

MacKinnon in some pretty elite company. Love watching him play. In ways he reminds me of a young Sid. Anyone see that goal by Rantanen last night? MacK did all the work and saucer'd it to him for the one-Tee. Beauty.

Longest point streak from the start of the #StanleyCup Playoffs — NHL history:

Bryan Trottier: 18 (1981)
Nathan MacKinnon: 14 (2020)
Mark Messier: 14 (1988)
Bobby Orr: 14 (1970)
Mark Messier: 13 (1994)
Bobby Orr: 13 (1972)

Sort of looking at what SJ did with having Karlsson and Burns on separate pairs (not that it's working now).

If we traded Letang sure. Otherwise I don't see how we make it work. Pietrangelo is better than Letang, but not so much better that I feel the need to get in a bidding war.

Pietrangelo is a career Blue. He's their captain. He's laid down a foundation there. His family is there. He's one season removed from a championship with them. They just cleared out a chunk of cap.

I think he stays a Blue.

Would love Pietrangelo but I just can't see how it happens. Pens can't afford to give the stupid overpay for him and I don't know that he would choose Pittsburgh over a place like Toronto.

I do have to say that I could easily see him leaving St Louis. Not exactly a desirable city to live in when every team would love to have you.

He's staying, just as much as JJ is staying here. So it doesn't matter.

Sign Pietrangelo and trade Letang for a haul would be the type of retooling that could make a real impact. It's just way too improbable.

Yep, I agree. Said earlier in the week these ideas of signing a FA so you can trade a player never work.

Not sure if he even makes it to FA, but I'd imagine he'd want a younger core if he did. He is supposedly miffed that they've done a few other extensions and made him wait.
