People saying the Allen trade ups Murray's value, I disagree. I think it only increases his value in that there is one less potential goalie target available. However, with goalies, I think their value is all about what have you done for me lately. Allen had a really good season. Murray? Pretty terrible, and 3 full years of average to bad. Also, Allen is just a one year commitment. Murray is going to want at least as much money as Allen but for many more years. And he's still a big question mark. We'll see, but I think this caps Murray's value as a mid-3rd round pick.

With cap increases im pretty sure these contracts are pretty in line with the percentage of the cap that the Malkin and Ovie’s contracts took up at the time. Didn’t Ovie’s big contract set a record once upon a time? Players aren’t going to stop demanding the max when they are clearly worth the max.
- Victoro311

Well the cap has increased less than 10% since the Pens cups and the max salary has increased 30%.

Ovie was a record but that was a long time ago when the pens used to whoop them.

I'd say..."you want Murray? You either take JJ with him or we take our first back." Phone clicks!

I mean, I'd love either of those scenarios but realistically I'd settle for getting Kerfoot.

Kerfoot straight up? He would be somewhat of a buy low, under-the-radar 3C. Can't say I'd be too excited, but I think the value is right.

Yea, but they can't play JJ otherwise it doesn't matter who the third line is.

The Athletic. Said he would have assumed Murray would have been in the Kapanen trade but an unnamed league exec told him as of a week or so ago that Dubas still has interest.

Basically it sounds like Dubas didn’t want to move on Murray until he knew what was happening with Andersen, but JR didn’t have the patience to wait that out and gave up Dubas’ asking price for Kapanen at that moment.

So, if STL got rid of Allen to make room to re-sign Pietrangelo, I'm assuming that Bozak and his $5M cap hit might be available. Not that I want him, but I'm guessing he would come cheap. Another scenario would be one in which Sundqvist comes back to the Pens, but he's only making $2.75M, so that doesn't help them as much. Also, he wasn't one of JR's picks so he probably doesn't care about him.

I know, but that can be said for every post ever posted on every blog. Coach doesn't matter because of JJ. Assistants don't matter because of JJ. Kap doesn't matter because of JJ. I think it's best to set aside JJ as a given that yes, we'd like to get rid of him but no, we're not going to get Kerfoot for Murray and JJ. And TOR isn't in the discussion for taking on JJ's salary, either.

For what it will take of offload JJ, I think it makes more sense just to buy him out or bury him. But by all means, try to trade him first. But I'm still going to think about trades that can help the team and just view JJ as irrelevant for the purpose of fruitful discussion. Of course he's very relevant to the future success (or lack thereof), but it is pointless to talk about him as negating any meaningful transaction that doesn't involve him being shipped out.

The Bozak ship sailed. If we were getting him it would have been while Kessel was here.

I like bringing Velluci up from the AHL. Gonna be an interesting dynamic in the coaches room. Velluci understands the players in the AHL (like Sully before), and he's a potential HC in waiting if Sully doesn't pull his head out of his ass.

Pretty crafty move by old JR.

Yea Vellucci will want POJ in over JJ, and that is the biggest, best (frank)ing thing that can happen.

I'm not saying not to make moves, it just will all be for nothing if they keep throwing the anchor out there. Actually calling JJ an anchor is demoralizing to anchors, he's his own level of (frank)ing absurdly bad.

That's pretty interesting. What exactly could be happening with Andersen? Signing an extension? Being shipped out?

I think we'll look back at the Kap trade as a net positive. Could the price of Kap have gone up? It's hard to imagine, but who knows. We also got rid of Rodrigues and I didn't realize that teams are on the hook for RFAs and he has a relatively high QO.

I think Vellucci was one of the people lobbying for the Josh Maniscalco signing. So maybe they are all talking JJ up for a trade lol.
- 123Kid

Really hadn't heard that. Maniscalco has a real intriguing set of tools. I can't get myself to believe we'd get lucky 2 years on a row and have a defenseman play right after college, particularly a younger one, but I'll definitely be keeping tabs on him.

I agree that he is past his prime and I don't want him. I didn't want him in his prime. I can't imagine how bad the defense would be if he were on a line with Kessel.

I'd say it would be a far lower level of lucky because he only has to be third pairing. He's older than most draftees (obviously) and he has the body to play in the NHL (unlike POJ most likely at the moment).

Anderson is in the last year and coming off his worse season in a few. He wasn't bad, just not as good as previous years, at least if you use stats like GSAA that account for how bad Toronto has been defensively. But they may not want to commit to him and are rumored to at least be considering replacing him now since there are so many goalies available.

LeBrun is not the only one who's connected them to Murray thinking they'd want a younger goalie.
