He's a UFA so the expansion wouldn't matter, I get the "fresh" aspect, but almost 15 mill is a lot to sink into the net.
- burgh4life87

Except he would still meet the expansion criteria for Montreal. You can expose players that are set to be UFA.

Personally I think signing Dillon would be a Substantial upgrade over petts, add a little grit, and prob cost about the same $ and would allow petts to be traded for another need. That being said petts isn’t a problem at all but I think he is replaced somewhat easily.

Letang on the other hand is just not replaceable unless you’re paying pietro 9-10 mil. We can’t trade for anything of that caliber, I can’t see any big fa signing here knowing the window is closing imminently. Trading Letang will worsen the team pretty much no matter what. The ripple effect on D would be too much, especially with the abomination of the 3rd pair.

- 10inchTerror

I always feel these moves work better on message boards than in real life. Teams tend to keep the guy they have, especially if they're happy with them and in this case just extended them, not pick one guy up to use another as a trade asset

I like Dillon so I don't hate your thought process even though I probably keep the younger guy. Can't see this actually happening though.

If Allen gets a 3rd, Murray has to get more than that. I know that's not apples for applies, but still.

They need to keep Price fresh and have a solid backup. Bodes well for Murrays value, that is for sure but then again MTL has about 100 picks in this draft.

That should free up enough to get Petro resigned.

- MacPatty

This exactly. They've been riding Price hard and have started to wonder if a better backup might get him back to his old level. The playoffs reinforced that belief.

I am surprised they didn't get someone cheaper, but they have a lot of cap space and some expensive RFAs due extensions in a year so it might make sense for their situation more than most.

This isn't a thin market. I feel they could have got a cheaper quality back-up and gave up less.

Pens also extended their goalie coach 2 years...why though?
- MattStrat

Yeah dude had one main job when he took over after the Cup runs: keep Murray playing at a high level. Everyone else gets fired but he gets an extension?

So Vellucci was also WBS GM as well as coach. Is Botts coming back too?
- 668710

DK's site says Botts coming back is a lock unless he gets another job. He got that from a source with the team. We shall see.

Well we can only hope Reirden, who will be in charge of the defense group, wont be a (frank)ing yes man to Sully when it comes to JJ. Maybe just maybe he'll recognize the dumpster fire JJ is and not be little b!tch about it. You can tell Jacques Martin is/was a yes man.
- MattStrat

Reirdon was also a big Orpik and Scuderi guy too though. Actually, I hope Bellucci runs the defensemen and Reirdon the forwards and PP.

Im seeing them currently have 4.5 mill cap space with one UFA (Weise) and 4 RFA's to sign (Domi, Hudon, Mete and Ouilliet)...now Domi is probably gone but will have 4.5 mill to sign 5 players. Manageable but certainly not a lot of space. I guess they probably have a few ELCers kickin around they may feel comfortable sticking in lineup...maybe?

Murray will get a 3rd better than Washington’s 3rd.

There were plenty of reports that Murray just straight-up didn't listen and that was much of the frustration with him.

09 Orpik and Scuds or the later years? I can't remember. Did they get fired right before Bylsma?

Seriously - Letang's not changing the way he plays and that's a problem. You
can't mis-manage the puck like he does without consequences. (9) turnovers
and (0) takeaways in our series with Montreal - not to mention his horrible play
in last years playoff series vs Islanders. He's a major reason why our power
play sucks.

It's time the Pen's move him while the return is still decent.

It's time for Murray to go - just a matter of time before he goes down with
another injury. He hasn't been the same since the passing of his father.

While I admit that Letang can be frustrating to watch on the PP at times, remember that's he's been part of this PP when it's been great and when it's sucked. There is a systematic reason the failure of their PP. It's not Letang.

I think people miss about defenseman like Letang or just top players in general is that they are high-event risk-taking players. There are consequences to those risks and also consequences to not taking those risks. The difference is players like him have the ability to create those opportunities for the team to capitalize on.

Allen had a bit of a Renaissance this year, he was pretty damn good. They could have gone cheaper but there are no easy nights for shooters against Montreal this year.

Add to that, they could likely flip him at some point if goalie injuries pop up elsewhere.

He was garbage in the Habs series IMO. 9 give aways lead the team by 4 or 5. Zero take aways. Bad positional and made brutal choices with the puck. None of this is to say I think he should be traded but the more I think about it the more I think the Pens might actually be better with Petry and Domi instead of just Letang...especially if he stays like that or gets worse. I know, 4 game sample size, but the guy has had an ordeal with health and he's getting older. Petry is only a year younger but Petry looked great and has played pretty much a full season each of the last 4.

I think some of you are forgetting that now is the time when the expansion draft starts coming into play for moves that happen.

This is why I'd like Botts around. He definitely gets this and the cap much better than JR.

Common knowledge, yeah. He was in charge there and he wouldnt be with the Pens. When he was with the Pens his main responsibilities included monitoring the salary cap and contract research and negotiations, but also worked with salary arbitration and preparation as well as scouting. Dude has a MBA.
