Because the leafs care more about cap hit than they do cash.
Some teams care more about cash than cap hit.
There is an opportunity for the leafs to get better or stay the same in goal while reducing the cap hit of the goaltender. - Leafs43
How do the leafs reduce their cap hit and stay the same or upgrade? Sounds like a difficult task as any goalie making less isn't a bonafide starter. They project to be and might be ready to take a chance but the leafs did this experiment with a multitude of goalies and it didn't quite pay off....Recently it was Bernier.

Trading Nylander opens up a world of possibilities.
Also, there is merit to bringing in a legit Top pairing RHD and 2nd pair RHD to solidify the d-corps. I'm thinking a strong Top 4 can make goalies like Hutch* look pretty competent.
* I'm not really suggesting Hutch is an answer. |

Nah... trade Nylander for picks. Move up in the draft order for Askarov and, with the additional cap space, sign Petro.
Additional moves should target a 3C and someone better than Holl for the 2nd pair. |

Good post.
Trading Nylander is addition by subtraction. Does anyone really think they need his offense? Whomever plays with AM/JT will get their 20+, and anyone would be better defensively, therefor the Leafs wouldn’t need to score 5 goals to win every night. When they drafted him, he was supposed to be a C, but he can’t hack that position, nor can he produce w/o an elite C.
But I’d rather trade him for someone who can help them win now. If Askarov falls to 15 take him. |

Jenner is the 3C Toronto desperately needs.
Anderson 3RW to replace kapanen
Korpisalo to replace Freddie.
Savard top 4 RHD.
Foudy can play on line 1to4, he's an excellent prospect.
Pietrangelo can still be had when trading Andersen and Johnsson for picks/prospects. Leafs cannot wait 3y for askarov.
Hyman - Tavares - Marner
Foudy - Matthews - Mikheyev
Robertson - Jenner - Anderson
Engvall - ?? - ??
Rielly - Pietrangelo
Muzzin - Savard
Sandin - Dermott
Campbell and Korpisalo to split starting duties |

Wasn't it just the US preordered a bunch of vaccines and did not pledge to give any away? You are making it seem as if an American made vaccine won't be available to the rest of the world...that isn't true. - Leafs43
I don’t want to get bogged down in a political debate, just wanted to pass on what I read about what is happening with vaccine distribution since it’s relevant.
Yes, the US preordered a bunch of vaccines. I don’t really know how much 9f those companies supplies or what that means for other countries’ access.
This is something different. Right now 170 countries are participating in a process to share in the development and distribution of Covid vaccines. The idea is that vaccines will go to high risk patients first. The idea is to try to slow down the spread internationally. There is some kind of agreed upon process for distribution of all the vaccines.
The US said they don’t want to play because the WHO is one of the participants. That means they won’t have access to any of the vaccines developed by the participating countries (which I think includes the Oxford vaccine) and from what I read the other countries won’t have access to the American vaccines.
If none of the American ones pan out (unlikely) they’re SOL. But by not doing a global strategy you run the risk things flaring up internationally and spreading through travel.
Anyway, this is just FYI health stuff NOT THE START OF A POLITICAL DISCUSSION |

Yeah, so?
20 40 25 would be fine for the second line. Why lock down that extra 15 and hurt urself defensively? Fwiw I think Robby or Miky could potentially notch 30+. |

nylander was #16 in the league in goals.
doubt mikheyev ever gets close to there. maybe robertson, but that's a few years away.
nylander has his faults. but he's talented. we'll miss his goal scoring...especially inside 10 feet from the net. |

Agreed. I certainly don't think removing Nylander is "addition by subtraction" but rather his cap hit should be redirected to a more dire need: a stud RHD who is a leader and can play BIG minutes.
Would hate to lose Willie but it may be a necessary evil.
Hopefully, Robertson and some other spare parts can play Top 6 roles. |

So do you rather lose Willie get AP or lose Johnnson and get Broddie or fill in name of guy at same price? Is gap between Johnnson and Willie greater than gap between AP and next available guy? |

I'd rather go for Ekholm over Ellis. Doubt they would move Ekholm though but he would be very good for this team. |
