How did Tampa obtain Hedman, Stamkos, Kucherov, Point, Cirelli ?

How did the Isles obtain Barzal, Beauvillier, Bailey, Nelson, Lee, Pullock ?

How did the Avs obtain MacKinnon, Rantanen, Landeskog, Makar,

How did the Canucks obtain Horvat, Pettersson, Hughes, Demko.

Building through the draft is not the flaw, it’s the idiots we have employed to build through the draft that have been flawed.

There will be 30-40 players from this years draft class that will go on to play a minimum of 350 NHL games in a variety of roles.

The 8th overall pick gives you a shot at a top 6 forward or top 4 d-man cost controlled for 8 seasons. Make the right damn pick.

There is a reason why Monahan/Domi are available, remember that.

- Pegullaville

There's two sides to the coin though.

How did Vegas get Stone, Pacioretty, Theodore etc.

How did Dallas get Seguin? How did the Isles get JG Pageau

How did Col get Kadri and Burakovsky? and Girard.

I think were ok on top end talent if Cozens and Jokiharju pan out to be the top 6 forward and top 2-3 D they should be.

What it really comes down to is how much do we want to keep Eichel. Because he's going to become a major problem and will absolutely go public to get the (frank) outta town if we arent good this year

If we swap 8 for a solid producing now talent, that's great. What we need is some of the post firs rounders to pan out

The point was made that an 8 pick's best case is NHL ready in 2-3 years. It's just plainly not the best case.

RoR played 81 games in his draft year as 2nd round pick. That's close to best case.

- Lunaion

My fault.

Think I missed the best case and thought of likely case.

You are right.

There's zero chance of them Screwing up the pick one of the top 3 are gonna be available that we wanted..

I said the same thing about the casey draft and they (frank)ed that one up .. lol

- GERBE!!!75PTS

exactly.. i still have a small amount of hope for casey though

I'm not trying to say anything crazy here. If he said the pick might not be ready for 2-3 years, I wouldn't have said a word. Some of these guys aren't far away, and like Gerbe said, some will essentially get an extra half season of work in.

With the above said, here's where I'm at:

In order to keep the 8th overall, is getting a lesser Center duo of say Bonino and Copp enough, along with other prudent moves of course (like trading 2 of the glut of RHD's), to get them to be a playoff team next year?

I think it would be, especially considering there is a likelihood the play-in round is here to stay (I'm guessing it would be top 10 from each conference, with the top 6 receiving a first round bye and the bottom 4 playing a best of 5 series to make the official 1st round of the playoffs).

Oh no, I get it. Just misread.

The extra time should help and it can't hurt that a lot of the talking heads feel as though this class is above average in talent, particularly in that top10.

I want to make the pick. I'm surprised that this seems so evenly split.

That'll happen when fans have seen Nylander and Mittelstadt drafted at 7

Stone, Pacioretty, Pageau were all impending UFA’s on teams looking to retool and all signed extensions on the time of the trade.

Seguin was dealt by Chirelli, enough said.

The Kadri trade worked out for Colorado. The ROR trade worked out for St. Louis. Getting Burakovsky was a great trade only giving up a 2nd.

I’m missing the part though where a top 10 pick was traded for any of those players.

The fear is legitimate.

I want to make the pick too.

I also think we go a little overboard every year with how good draft prospects are.

If we were actually good, and not picking top 10, our superstar wouldn't be close to wanting out, thus making this scenario even debatable, but here we are.

We also probably would still have ROR and made the playoffs if Botterill had traded the Mittelstadt pick for another forward. Making the pick is no more of a sure thing than trading it. It's actually way less of a sure thing

montour and a second gets you a really good player

hell montour alone might get you puljujarvi

marcus johanson and a third gets you a solid young promising middle 6 with upside say foegele

sign fast and soderberg

package risto and casey for a better d man

olofsson-eichel-skunk
skinner-cozens-puljujarvi

Think crag is right, we've just been terrible at drafting and that probably makes some gun shy. Kind of makes sense too, we don't trust drafting so we are ready to trade for known commodities.

I get it both ways, probably side with you in the end. I can understand why someone would want to keep Jack happy and eliminate the risk of picking a bust.

I’m sure Mittelstadt still has value though.

We turned Nylander into Joker.

Why can’t Mitts, Montour, and the 2021 first not bring back a 2C ?

It could, but what youre actually saying is it takes 3 firsts to get a 2C

Mitts (1st), Montour (1st), 2021 1st.

The excitement factor for me at 8 is low. We've picked four times at 7 or 8 in the past 10 years - Risto, Mitts, Nylander and Cozens.

I think you can keep Eichel happy by improving the team without having to trade the 8th overall.

The excitement factor for me moving 8 for Monahan whom Calgary can’t wait to get out of town is low

Opinions vary, naturally. But it shouldn't be surprising that some fans are less than excited to repeat at 8 given our recent history there, even if it is a strong draft.

I fully expect them to draft there by the way, and thats fine (as long as it's not Sanderson)

Agreed and I pray that's what they're trying to look for. At the same point, if 8OA is traded for a great player, I doubt Jack would wrinkle his nose at it.
