Yes, as a 3rd line!

Great blog, Tyler! I like the concept of it being a true fan-made roster based on players you personally liked no matter the reason while also icing a team that could play the roles needed to compete.

You got me thinking about my own favorite team.

Although I wouldn't have the entire ABC line, Kyle Calder could make the cut. Tuomo Ruutu is definitely on it.

I go back too far to pick a starting lineup without leaving lots of very good players off the list. My favorite player back then (mid 60's) was Chico Maki (#16, Bobby's original number before he switched to #9). But, here I go:

Also like the Wilson pick - Dougie was a heck of a player before Keenan chases him out of town.

That would be interesting. And a stipulation should be that they played at least a season (maybe 2), appearing in at least 50 or 60 games...soemthing like that anyway.

LINE 3 - They only played one year together in 1987-88, but Savard had 44 Goals, Larmer and Vaive each potted 43. Savard had 131 points that year playing with the 2 snipers enough for a career high for an individual season.

LINE 4 - The "Rat" and Ladd playing with Amonte; thank God Tony finally gets to play on a good team.

EXTRA FORWARD: Graham - Leadership and great PK'er

Keith-Chelios - 2 best all-around Hawk defensemen ever.
Hjalmarsson -Seabrook - 2 physical warriors play together on pairing 2.
Suter-Wilson - Nice all-around mix to play on the 3rd pair.

7TH "D" - Smith - Great defenseman, just wish he would have played in Chicago earlier.

Crawford - 1A and 1B -Cannot go wrong with either man in net.

I really liked Ruutu, he just could never stay healthy. Outside of a few years for the Canes, he never really lived up to his offensive promise either.

Wow!! In 1987, I was 13 and always had to go to bed at the 2nd Intermission, remember listening on my alarm clock radio to the rest of the game when the Hawks used to be on WBBM, AM 780. Also first Hawks games I remember watching were on Sports Vision, how many times has that changed? Ha Ha!! Also, old man Wirtz had Hawks pay-per-view home playoff games if you wanted to buy it called Hawks Vision, what a cheap ass!!

Tallon and Foley were very good together. Did not suck each other off the whole game like Foley and Olczyk do.

Yeah he was never able to put his offensive game together at the NHL level consistently.

Guy never cheated you on effort, though. He was a wrecking ball every shift until his body completely fell apart.

I also remember him once boarding and injuring Darcy Tucker when he was with the Avalanche and, next time they played, first shift out against him Ruutu went to him and they dropped the gloves.

I've never been a big fighting fan, but I thought it was mighty big of Ruutu to go to Tucker and let him take a shot at him after throwing an ugly hit.

Sadly, I think it fell apart by the time he was 20. He had 2 major surgeries, early on in his career, back and knee. Like you said largely dictated by his style of play. Great hitter, but took a toll majorly on him!!

he had a couple solid seasons in Raleigh but yeah I don't think his body was ever going to let him live up to the promise he showed when the Hawks drafted him.

Yeah, Secord didn't have the career some other players had that would be worthy of being selected, but Tyler said it should be a well constructed team and for a couple years Secord potting 50 and riding shotgun for Savard was about as good as it gets.

Tony O and also Hasek deserved strong consideration but I could only go with two, so ...

Also, I debated between Amonte and Sharp but I wanted Roenick as one of the centers and Tony played so well with him so that was the deciding factor.

I remember when the Hawks not only didn't televise their home games but they delayed the radio broadcast start until 8:15 which usually coincided with the 1st intermission with the 7:30 start.
Lloyd Pettit and Lou Boudreau aired the 1st period highlights at that time. If there was a big fight or injury that extended the 1st period, we were lucky enough to hear the last few minutes of the period.
