And Hank got 6 months older not younger
- Brukie

And, apparently played better.
Jesus, how is it so hard to understand that better on Feb. 23, 2020 doesn't mean better 100% of the rest of your career?
Hank is a fierce competitor, facing the end of his career. You don't think he could settle into a determined mind set and get into a groove? Much like he has done about 136 times over his career.

Great reasoning
- mdw7413

As you get older you dont get better, he isnt Barry Bonds. Quinn didnt play him over AG during the season for a reason.

So by your reasoning Zib and Panarin should have still been unstoppable........... What happened? They got 6 months older?

Whoa Whoa Whoa, Im playing devils advocate here. If the season ended normal and Igor was unable to play, would AG get the call over Hank??

Cant say he was playing better because they didnt play any games, maybe he looked better in practice??
- Brukie

Wow, if that's what you think is the important thing to comment on then I don't know that we can have a discussion.
You know what they were doing. You need 100% accuracy in inane details in order to follow logic, do you?
The issue at bar is that you seem to think there is no possible chance that a guy who has more wins than 99.7% of all people to play goal in the NHL could play above the level of a virtual rookie when heading into a win or go home situation.
I say that is incorrect. Do you have a response, or would you like to nitpick at the accuracy of my statistics?

No, you're playing dumb.
The season did not end normally. Nothing about these entire playoffs is normal. What would happen normally is completely irrelevant.
The facts are that they found out Igor could not play and they had 2 guys to choose from based off of 1) their overall careers, 2) their recent play (which was months prior for both) and 3) who looked best in the restart camp.
Maybe the question about Georgiev should be, why didn't he outplay the washed up, old has been?

I disagree.
I think judging the coaching staff while not knowing the facts of what lead to their decision is accusing them of acting sentimental. The reports at the time said that Lundqvist was looking the best out of the 3 of them, IIRC. I seriously doubt that would have been enough to start him over Shesty, but...

this is what I am afraid of, if on this blog we get this sensitive about Lundqvist, do you have any idea what it's going to be like for the large segment of the fanbase who aren't as sophisticated as us?

"how can they treat Hank like this?" "Hank deserves better"

BUCKLE UP, if he's still here it's gonna get painful

Jim, you are missing my point.
I am saying that their decision had nothing to do with history. Hank performed well when they were getting set to resume and that got him the nod. Period.
Why is that viewed as an impossibility?

Throwing gasoline on the fire:

Been no mention of Hank's truly incredible playoff history. Past performance is not indicative of future results, but there's no doubting that some players elevate their games in the playoffs. Hank might be the perfect example for this.

I don't fault Quinn for the decision. If he had played Georgiev over Hank, I'm sure there would be an army of people who thought Hank should have played. Lose-lose situation for Quinn.

This! A graceful exit for Hank is the medicine we need. I hope we find it.

my point isn't simply that "Georgiev was playing better than Lundqvist" back in February

my point is that for two times, there were a span of 3 games in 4 nights, Georgiev was forced to play every single minute of those games because Lundqvist was a non entity and they should have owned it

the break from Lundqvist was already made, I wish it would have stayed broken because it's one of the hardest breakups they'll ever have to do

JD needs to call Cashman/Girardi for the Jeter-retirement playbook.

see, I don't care about a graceful exit for Hank, I don't want next season to be about Lundqvist's swan song

I want it to be about Shesty's pursuit of the Calder trophy

personally I think that there is a better chance that Henrik thinks he can play another 5 years than he thinks he should retire right now

Ok, understood.
My point is that a when a coach is faced with making his line up for a playoff game (which these were, in essence), his single focus is on who gives them the best chance to win that game. Nothing else. Not, a swan song. Not, who was my 3rd string 6 months ago. Not, who is making more money. Not, who beat this team last time.
If Georgiev looked better than Hank in the time they had to prepare for Aug. 1st, he would have started. He didn't.

I can tell this discussion should be over for me and I will try to let it die here. Just bothers me that people think any of this was about putting a focus on Hank. The team didn't show up. So, who was in the net didn't matter one bit.

We need to stop fighting about this because we are not in control of any of it. We need to focus on the 1st overall and be celebrating. Let the organization figure out the rest.
