Dont like the trade.

Rutherford traded an overvalued 1st round pick, as I said yesterday, that is a good strategy. Getting a 24 year old is a year or two old than what wouldve been ideal, but the basis of it still makes sense.

What I dont like is that he didnt wait at all to guage the value of the pick. 8 teams in the league cannot trade right now. Why make a trade when only a fraction of the teams can trade? Kapanen wasnt going anywhere.

Kapanen is a fine player, best player in the deal. Maybe that 1st pick hits, maybe it is a total bust. We wont know for a while.

But I still dont like the overall premise of the deal. Hard to explain why. I feel we could've done better. We didnt clear cap space and I would imagine this ends McCann's time here, unless they move him to center which doesnt sound like it based on Rutherford's interview last week. Unless they plan on trading Horny, which i would be 100% on board with then.

McCann and kap play different positions. The only positive I’m trying to see is that sheary won’t be back since lw is full and hopefully kap and rust are the top 2 rw.

Oof. You guys better enjoy the last years of Crosby and Malkin like I did with Datsyuk and Zetterberg. Dark years are close ahead.

That’s the thing. Kapanen was a need and he’ll probably be good here but this specific trade reeks of the kind of trade that will look terrible in a few weeks when teams start dealing for real. There will probably be a couple of better players or marginally worse players that go for less and we’ll be left dying to ourselves “we could have had that guy instead”. Seems to happen to us A TON...

What a bogus trade.

Didn’t gain any cap relief in the trade and made a trade for a third line RW, in which e already have 727276462 of them in Simon, Horny, Tanev, and now Kap.

Hopefully this is GMJRs last season.

I don’t really know if a third line RW was a need when you have Horny, Tanev and Simon.

So I wonder who goes at RW. Kap, Rust, Horny, Bjug? Legare is also a RW.

Makes me think there is a Hornquist for Domi trade lined up.

What sucks is that the package for Kapanen had good assets they could have used to go after a truly big acquisition like OEL.

The more I think about this, the more I think we should have given the 15th pick to Minnesota.

I have no confidence in this team making the playoffs in a normal regular season let alone the craziness next season will bring. We could easily give up a top 10 pick next season.

Good. As soon as the guys retire, I want to be as bad as possible and get top 5 picks. I dont want 5-6 years of hanging around 9/10th in the East and barely missing the playoffs and getting the 15th pick year after year.

I dont love the chances we give up a really solid 1st round pick to Minnesota next season.

kap has 80 points in the last 2 seasons
147 games

pretty sure he's a second line winger on most teams, including yours

That’s not what anyone said. They wanted the 1st used to dump jj. With the 1st home that basically means jj is going nowhere.. which comes as no surprise.

Good luck with the top 5 picks. The lottery system is a joke.

Kapenen is a good player on a cheap contract for 2 more years

Don't get too hung up on Hallander. The Org knows more than we do and for all we know he was busting and this was his last ounce of value.

#15 who won't be on the ice for 2 seasons for a proven, young NHLer on a cheap deal for 2 seasons is decent. There are probably a lot more parts about to move involving other players and other teams

Bettman will change it when it's our turn to be back in the Lottery.

But youre right, it's a joke. Completely defeats the purpose of having one.

Kapanen can fill the PP vacancy we have and is better suited for top 6 duty than the above mentioned. It is a good fit and a good target but the payment is absurd.

Kap can play the PP? With his 6 PP points over 2 seasons? Lol I dunno about that.

Personally, I think they should just use Rust there and work on his half wall game during the off-season.

I will agree the he is better suited for top 6 than most of them except maybe Horny.

Doms model doesn’t treat Kap well and his model is usually pretty solid...

There were no reports of him busting and most trackers had him projecting to a 2nd line centre. Which realistically puts him where we need him. 3rd line centre. The only thing I can think of is his fractured leg affected his skating a lot. Still a major overpayment. Aside from getting kap the other two players were downgrades that realistically never suit up aside from the ahl. So basically a 1st for kap, lesser prospects, and still have jj ffs

Welp, it was a nice run in the Sid/Geno era. We got to see three cups which is more than most fans will ever get to experience, so it's hard to complain, but I'm going to complain...

Rutherford has lost it. It's one thing for your team's reign to end because your players are simply too old and you need to start rebuilding. It's another when it ends because of stupidity.
