Yes, because it meant the Leafs could afford Marner

What is Hyman worth?

I don't want him to go. But I have this sneaking suspicion Dubas will package him for a defenseman over any of the big 4.

- Leafs43

I worry he won't age well. He'll be 29 at the start of his next deal.

yep. team is managed like it's a video game.

we keep drafting/bringing in talented but small players. yet somehow the team is getting worse.

but nothing to worry about. dubas knows all.

so we traded kadri, brown and a 1st away to overpay marner.

and then we missed the playoffs after having a worse season than the year before.

there was no rush to give marner 11m. could have signed him for 2 years and gave him the 11m ish on his next deal.

there were other options that needed to be explored. trading 1sts away than missing the playoffs is the same incompetent poop we got circa 2009.

not to beat a dead horse or anything, but Marner would not have taken a bridge deal.

dubas wasn't the guy to make it work. so that is probably right.

And also at the time it was 100% wrong.

Lehner couldn't make a save to save his life. Then he got his life together. Imagine that.

- GreatGigInTheSky

I worry about a guy like that being put in the Toronto fishbowl.

It might be about time we recognize that Canadian teams in general have a tough time with ridiculous over-the-top media coverage always in everyone's faces.

Argument really only exists in hockey. Does anyone complain about that who plays for Yankees or Red Sox? How about Lakers in basketball?

If players want to play where no one knows them so be it.

it just sucks about marelau. 13th overall pick in a deep draft. we'll see what player carolina gets but that one could end up hurting big time.

I think they may have traded it to the Rangers?

Unless they traded a different 1st?

They traded the worst of the two.

So theirs.

and this is the point.

we dumped our 1st so we could overpay marner.

if we make the playoffs - then fine. necessary short-term move.

but we didn't.

we dumped assets after winning nothing so we could win less. i am not sure how this is in anyway defensible.

I think he's got a good handle on his life now, as long as he stays sober.

Clowns like Simmons might test his sobriety, though.

Because if it was a full season they would've make the playoffs.

Even with a team devastated by injuries that didn't play even a single game this season with a full healthy lineup.

You HAVE to keep Hyman. It's gotta be Billy Ny that goes.

Just because you and I think it is an overpay, doesn't mean that Dubas does.. I have to believe that he has a plan in place and this was all part of that plan

we were 3 points up on florida and they had a game in hand. there was no guarantee.

facts are we lost 3 out of 5 to columbus in the pre-qualifying round that was open to 24 teams and did not make the round of 16.

we were also on a 95 point pace. which was less than the prior year.

i am sure he does have a plan.

but the fact is he took a team that was on the way up and turned it into a team on the way down.

sure seems like his plan sucks ass.

I was about to say something similar, we have no idea what deal he would have taken..but it didnt sound like a bridge would have gotten done before the season started.

I just refuse the form opinions and poop based on total guesses about what the Leafs could have done..when I have no idea

Like I always say, if you imagine the worst outcome for the Leafs, then that is the one that will happen.

We should have a pool where Matthews ends up at the end of this contract

- Aetherial

Yesssssss! Bring back the pool format, Aeth! It's easily been the best thing since this (frank)ing pandemic made everything go to hell.
