They are very correlated though.

Since by definition the things that prevent you from getting entry across a border are related to nationality, which by your definition should not be related to employment, you cannot have border restrictions based on nationality and lack of job restrictions (independent of nationality) at the same time.

- PT21

obviously you don't work in an industry that has foreign workers or you'd realize how little borders mean in that sense. the main barrier to entry to work, and i mean work that is can carry one out of poverty is licensing and the antiquated notion that a college degree means the graduate is skilled.

That's funny. I work part time in academia in a school of Public Policy and also do consulting. A majority of my colleagues are non-American.

Your second paragraph would take the conversation even further afield from where it is now. No one said anything about poverty. So lets focus on the following fact we have already discussed:

According to you, open borders and hiring the best qualified person for the job independent of nationality are two different things.

Now tell me how you would decide who the best person for a job is if that person cannot come to the firm for an interview because he does not have a visa? If even if you did manage a Zoom interview, you would still need the person to be physically present to do the job?

I am talking about most manufacturing/service/management jobs in the US, not tech/writing/finance.

But that's not what Bergevin said. He essentially apologized that they're putting someone who doesn't speak French (aka the "wrong" kind of person) in front of the fans/media. That's pretty bad.
- Scoob

Why does it trigger you so much? Apparently the fans/community/team think its important. And that statement was not meant for you anyway. Can't we just leave it at that?

Nobody mainstream talks about open borders, except right wing crackpots who falsely claim that mainstream left wingers do. Its like the defund police thing.

Absolutely not, not until you mention your preference for cheese steak.

It's funny how the same ppl who argue about the sanctity of sandwich toppings cannot fathom another community being particular about their hockey institution.

(And for the record, I'm onions, peppers mushroom and whatever cheese)

Exactly. Especially since we are talking about a symbol of entertainment, not the medical staff at McGill. Ppl need to be more tolerant.

Wait what?

I'll say one thing and then I'm done with it. What if a fans/community/team only wanted French/Canadian players on their team and didn't want, say black players on their team?

Let me clue you in on a simple distinction

Nobody complained/apologized/mentioned that the acting coach is not French-Canadian. They mentioned his language skills.

Speaking French is a learnable attribute.

Being black is not a learnable attribute.

Sheesh.

More of the same.

Forwards need to shoot more/bury chances.

The hardest thing to understand for me is how Kirk Muller can play/coach in that town for 13 years off and on and still not know enough French to pass muster.
