I am a S Jersey type and wouldn't consider anything other than provolone (unless they were out of it). I've never had a steak with whiz. It actually sounds disgusting.

So with you on that...

I lived in deep South Philly for about 18 years , a few 100 feet from Johns Roast Pork.
Would take any sandwhich they make over just about everything else in the City.

I have now moved back to NJ for the past 3 years and havent found a great sandwich spot that comes close to John's.

i dont think they really ever drafted that well, remember back in the day they had territorial rights to players. the 93 team had some home grown pieces in place but didnt win until they brought in bellows, cicarelli, and damphouse.
- twotoekenn

I'm laughing now (at myself), because as a smart-arse response I was going to bring up Ken Dryden... and then discovered that he was originally a 3rd round pick of the Boston Bruins. The things you learn.

is anybody else worried that Juliens absence will be used as a rally point for the habs, like win won for the gipper?

I'm really not. I just don't see them being able to play any harder than they played in Game 1.

I may have cause to look back at this statement and wish I hadnt said it, but... we'll see.

Back in the 80s and into the 90s, Gaetano's original Willingboro location served a mean steak that I would stack up against any I've had. They have expanded since then and while they are still good, they have slipped a little. Mama's in Bala Cynwyd has had excellent steaks for years. You just need to order light cheese (meaning less) because they otherwise put a bit too much on. One of my favs now is Tony Lukes (Oregon Ave location, *NOT* the ballpark location).

Hi. Big cheesesteak fan here. What is the "right" cheese to put on there for the locals? Whiz?
- Good On Paper

Truth is, there is no right answer. It's personal preference. For me, Whiz is the only cheese that's worse than government cheese and should be outright illegal to serve to humans. Personally, I like those places that do a blend that may include mild provolone, American, mild cheddar. I've had one that had Gruyere and light truffle oil that was fantastic.l

I don't get the Dalessandro's love. I used to work near there for about 20 years. Definitely great bread and cheese, but the meat was sub-par. After throwing out more than half of my cheesesteak 2 out of 3 times I stopped going altogether. Maybe it's gotten better again, but I swore they were using horse meat at the time. Really bad.

Best cheesesteak I've had was from Mama's Pizzeria (which is a misnomer as they no longer have pizza). Huge sandwich and just melts in your mouth. And yes, definitely provolone (American #2) but hell no to wiz.

Also a big yes to Philly/Italian roast pork.

- Quetzalcoatl

Its awful and they have the worst sauce for a pizzasteak. Chubby's across the street is way better....not even close

Boss, I'm with you on Mama's. The regular size is enough for two people. And they do a cheese blend, but will never tell anyone what it is exactly.

you constantly move things away from hockey. its wrong to exclude or have bias against someone because they are different period. my point about the funeral was that the world changes, mostly for the better. we accept differences and should embrace them.
so should the Canadiens, maybe they'll be successful if they hire the best coach, not the best french speaking coach.

- twotoekenn

There are two ways to look at equality in such things.

One is to just have the flow of life decide. This is the laissez faire melting pot model.

The other is the multicultural model, equal but with differences and diversity preserved.

I am not taking sides for or against either. That's too broad.

But for the purposes of this issue, you need to put on the glasses of the party that feels threatened.

In Canada they have First Nation elections. If a First Nation leadership candidate constantly showed up in a Brooks Brothers suit, would you feel there would be some basis for the tribes to feel uncomfortable? They already feel their culture is being threatened.

And I disagree with Scoob about the implications about apology and so on. Here is Bergevin's entire statement:

“We understand that Kirk does not speak French, but there are exceptional circumstances and we are asking you for your understanding,” Bergevin said in his statement.

For the Quebecois, their French identity is tremendously important. Part of that identity of their language, and part of their identity are the Habs.

When I go to France, I get far better service if I greet employees with a simple Bonjour/Bonsoir and say Merci and then carry on the rest of the conversation in English in between.

They want a recognition (in a world that is rapidly becoming globalized aka Anglo-Saxonized) that you understand that they are different, and that difference is important to them.

Cheesesteaks with wiz are delightful. When I’m feeling like an extra piece of poop, I’ll go American + Wiz. But it’s been a while since I did that.

Speaking of the dearth of places in S jersey, I have to confess that when Sarcone's Deli closed and Angelo's took over, I had low expectations. But I was impressed. The Upside Down John is a monster! You get a mini-workout for your arm muscles carrying that thing back!

Cheesesteaks:

If you need the stank of provolone to enjoy your sandwich (no hate), just get a roast pork with sharp prov and don’t waste your money on a steak.

The ribeye and onions go best with melty American or wiz.

The John’s Roast Pork double whammy is the only way to go. One of each and split it.

Flyers:

I LOVED the two rookies together on that third line in the round robin. I say get Jake back with his boys and lean into the smart north/south 2 way play of Farabee to maximize NAK.

- Wingdestroyer

That was my thoughts exactly, earlier. To anyone visiting the city skip Pats and Geno’s and do this instead

Philly will argue about cheesesteaks all day long (just read back), but none of them will disagree with this. Not one.

Oh, and my preference is provolone, but I’m perfectly fine with a wiz once in a blue moon if I’m just feelin the grease. Onions (or as they’ll say ‘wit’) always. Ketchup never.

And Philly doesn’t put onions, green peppers, and mushrooms in them as standard, so I don’t understand why it’s marketed that way across North America. Like when some pizza chain does a “Philly steak pizza” and slops those on there. What?

I mean, I like green bell pepper, but I never see it on a cheesesteak. Hots maybe added by some weirdos. Never random bell pepper.

If you really wanna see Philadelphians rage back n forth, ask em what they think of California-style cheesesteaks.

Which is basically lettuce, tomato, raw onion slices, and mayo

Agree on all that, but what do you mean Philly doesn't put onions? You fry the onions, then you chop up the meat over it, and then the cheese towards the end. Then you slather it on some good bread. As others have pointed out, the bread is crucial.

Again, I am not taking sides here, as both camps have merit, but out of curiosity, would you be ok with completely open borders if no American's job can be replaced by a foreigner?

That way, there is no economic insecurity, but we will be a Spanish speaking country in 30 years, and cheese steaks will be replaced by tacos al pastor.

Speaking of the last, the truck on 4th and Washington has some of the best.
