I don't get the Dalessandro's love. I used to work near there for about 20 years. Definitely great bread and cheese, but the meat was sub-par. After throwing out more than half of my cheesesteak 2 out of 3 times I stopped going altogether. Maybe it's gotten better again, but I swore they were using horse meat at the time. Really bad.

Best cheesesteak I've had was from Mama's Pizzeria (which is a misnomer as they no longer have pizza). Huge sandwich and just melts in your mouth. And yes, definitely provolone (American #2) but hell no to wiz.

Also a big yes to Philly/Italian roast pork.

Every time I drive by on Ridge Ave, it's mobbed there.

We used to pickup hoagies there on the way to Phillies games when I was a kid. Haven't been there in a million years.

You're right on about the bread and meat. As gross as wiz is, I've still got to go cheesesteak wit wiz and fried onions. My preferred Philly sandwich is roast pork with broccoli rabe and sharp provolone. If you're looking for a heart attack on a roll go with the Schmitter at McNally’s in Chestnut Hill

Why go so far if you are already in Philly? DeNic's in the Terminal sells just that. I usually order with the long hots.

Anyone remember the filthy floors of the concourse in the Vet (beyond the 300 level) and the Cheeseteak shops there? I don't remember Wiz even being an option. Maybe I misremember.

If you don't understand the significance of a Habs coach taking every question in English, then you may not fully appreciate it though.

Have you noticed that in the Bubble, guys like Couturier and Giroux invariably get asked some questions in French during the presser while 90% of the questions are in English? Do you think it is because the speaker/audience does not understand English? Of course not. It's symbolic.

My point is this: if they can't deal with the fact that their French speaking coach is seriously ill and they temporarily have to deal with someone who doesn't speak French then maybe they need to reevaluate their attitudes.

OK.....let’s do this!!! LETS GO FLYERS, just win baby.

Hopefully a speedy recovery for Julien, never like to see or hear about that. Secondly, our boys gotta just play their game and the results will take care of themselves. Kinda got away from their style in the second period last game but fortunately came out with the win.

Lets say the Eagles coach has a heart attack, and the press conference is in Chinese because the assistant coach is Chinese with very broken English.

oh yeah, with translators.

Understandable under the circumstances, sure?

Jarring? You tell me.

The apology is unnecessary though.

Who said they "can't deal?" All that was offered was an a priori explanation, given the circumstances.

Following up, it would be like if Howie Roseman said "hey, presser will be in Chinese. There will be English translations. Sorry about that, but hope folks understand under the circumstances."

I don't understand whats so bad about that.

The Montreal Canadiens organization was founded in 1909, this has been an ongoing issue for over 100 years, English vs French debate, it isn’t going to change any time soon. (frank) those dysfunctional media wieners....LETS GO FLYERS !!!!

But that's not what Bergevin said. He essentially apologized that they're putting someone who doesn't speak French (aka the "wrong" kind of person) in front of the fans/media. That's pretty bad.

Combining the two things we are arguing about on gameday: sandwiches and culture, let me give you an analogy.

Remember when Geno's had a sign saying order in English? And if you walk inside Claudio's they have anti shoplifting signs with Hispanic intonations.

Bigoted? Sure. But you understand where they are coming from? That area used to be heavily Italian. Its now overrun by Vietnamese and Mexicans. They feel culturally threatened.

Your culture at the funeral, was it being threatened by the heavy accent? Probably not. Also, that was a private event.

Ok, I am moving on from all this to Hockey.

So, I noticed Bill posted Corsi stats for individual periods in a game. Where does one get those?

Kirk Muller was one of those guys who, back in the day, I always wished would be a Flyer someday. He was not a Hall of Fame caliber player, but if there is ever a Hall of Just Really Good, he should be a first ballot entrant.

you constantly move things away from hockey. its wrong to exclude or have bias against someone because they are different period. my point about the funeral was that the world changes, mostly for the better. we accept differences and should embrace them.
so should the Canadiens, maybe they'll be successful if they hire the best coach, not the best french speaking coach.

That is one of the principle reasons they have been largely irrelevant since the mid-90s.

Bullpoop, they’ve been irrelevant, like many other teams since the mid 90’s, because they got away from drafting so well. Which used to be something they did better than anyone.

i know, and appreciate the history. there are only so many people available that could coach a team, why limit yourself to only those that speak a specific language?

i dont think they really ever drafted that well, remember back in the day they had territorial rights to players. the 93 team had some home grown pieces in place but didnt win until they brought in bellows, cicarelli, and damphouse.

This is absolute and complete heresy. What Philly native eats cheese steak with Wiz? I am not even from here but been here close to 30 years and consider myself one of the natives. The people who eat wiz are those who line up outside Pats or Geno's or Jim's. Those are usually south Jersey types or kids from the burbs. Its gotta be Provolone, followed by American. There has to be fried onions.

You nailed the Johns Roast Pork though. I would put D'Allesandro up there. There is a falloff after that.

- PT21

I am a S Jersey type and wouldn't consider anything other than provolone (unless they were out of it). I've never had a steak with whiz. It actually sounds disgusting.
