I'm always taken aback by the way certain boxes must be checked before one can be a coach in Montreal..

“We understand that Kirk does not speak French, but there are exceptional circumstances and we are asking you for your understanding,” Bergevin said in his statement." (quoted from TSN)

Could you imagine if similar standards were applied in Philly and if A.V. had a health issue and say.. Mike Yeo was tapped to step in to be the Flyers coach?

"We understand that Mike prefers his cheesesteaks with Whiz, but we're asking for your patience and understanding until we can get him into a re-education camp and correct his un-right thinking".

- Doc_Sarcasm

I really hope that was said tongue-in-cheek.

Frost not good enough for that fourth line? He was so touted by HeX

Provy. And if you put anything other than fried onions on it it’s in defiance of god.

Mushroom's are a sin that can be over-looked. And, lots of salt, pepper, Ketchup.

I might need one of those today. I live in the cheesesteak barren lands of the south. However, about a year+ ago, we got a Capriotti's (Delaware chain). Definitely better than anything else that I've had in the south. The key is that they fly in the bread. If anyone's in Delaware and you haven't been there, its worth it. If feeling adventurous try "the Bobbie".

It’s really more about the bread, the meat, and the seasoned grille, but the general rule of thumb is inner city goes whiz (with a few exceptions), and burbs go provolone. Occasionally sharp provolone if they got it, although that’s more of a roast pork thing
Many will argue that the Philly roast pork is the better sandwich, but really both are heavenly and will kill you quick

I’m a Johns Roast Pork guy when I go home. I buy a roast pork, whomever is accompanying me will get the cheesesteak, and we split halves. That’s the way to do it.

Oh, and just because burbs go provolone doesn’t mean they’re doing it wrong. Lotta fantastic cheesesteak jawns in the burbs. Many of those inner city families moved out that way. Dalessandro’s is a personal fave.

Just find a place with the right roll

- Hesh_

This is absolute and complete heresy. What Philly native eats cheese steak with Wiz? I am not even from here but been here close to 30 years and consider myself one of the natives. The people who eat wiz are those who line up outside Pats or Geno's or Jim's. Those are usually south Jersey types or kids from the burbs. Its gotta be Provolone, followed by American. There has to be fried onions.

You nailed the Johns Roast Pork though. I would put D'Allesandro up there. There is a falloff after that.

Yo, all.

Speaking French is more than just an affectation in Quebec. They feel their culture is threatened, they have been trying to secede forever. Speaking French is more than a language skill for a symbolic figure like a Habs coach. It would be equivalent to an Eagles coach saying he does not understand or like south Philly.

In the late 90s, I was actually told by a shop-owner he did not understand English in a drugstore in Old Montreal (which is very unlikely, since it is so touristy).

I didnt see the press conference, I was merely quoting TSN's story. I would also hope that Marc was being slightly sarcastic considering the nonsense that has gone on in the past, and also that Kirk Muller was.. you know.. CAPTAIN of the team once upon a time.

Not a big provolone guy. Basically only on chicken parm sandwiches, or maybe a meatball sandwich.

Individually, I'm a big fan of Farabee, Grant, & NAK. But I just don't really like the look of that line. Seems like a thrown together hodge-podge. But AV has done a great job so far, so we'll see how it goes. I hope it works out.

And whiz is not the "right" cheese for anything. Except maybe a constipated dog.

Cheesesteaks:

If you need the stank of provolone to enjoy your sandwich (no hate), just get a roast pork with sharp prov and don’t waste your money on a steak.

The ribeye and onions go best with melty American or wiz.

The John’s Roast Pork double whammy is the only way to go. One of each and split it.

Flyers:

I LOVED the two rookies together on that third line in the round robin. I say get Jake back with his boys and lean into the smart north/south 2 way play of Farabee to maximize NAK.

I went to TSN to read it with my own eyes. It says the quote was from "his statement" - not sure if there was a live conference to go along with it.

And yes, I agree with your thoughts - it had to be sarcastic.

I know about the cultural "tensions" but given the circumstances of the coaching situation the comment had to be sarcastic.

Exactly. So the Flyers had some questionable play in 2nd period... They only got scored on via PP, and got the goal back 17 sec later. We weathered the storm.
- leon neon

As bad as we were in the second, Montreal gets a 2 on 0 where the puck carrier whips out. Where is the meme on that one.

I wasnt thinking.. there are no conferences in this age of Wutang Virus. So, it was probably exactly that: a released statement.

I remember when lindros didn't want to play for the nordiques he was called a racist by some of the francophone population. Its not silly, its plain stupid to exclude someone because they're different.

If you don't understand the significance of a Habs coach taking every question in English, then you may not fully appreciate it though.

Have you noticed that in the Bubble, guys like Couturier and Giroux invariably get asked some questions in French during the presser while 90% of the questions are in English? Do you think it is because the speaker/audience does not understand English? Of course not. It's symbolic.

Thanks Bill! Was yelling at the tv during that second period for AV to use a timeout! I think it would have really helped to settle the boys down. The proof is how they played in the third period after going in the room and regrouping. Let’s Go Flyers!

You're right on about the bread and meat. As gross as wiz is, I've still got to go cheesesteak wit wiz and fried onions. My preferred Philly sandwich is roast pork with broccoli rabe and sharp provolone. If you're looking for a heart attack on a roll go with the Schmitter at McNally’s in Chestnut Hill

Lets say the Eagles coach has a heart attack, and the press conference is in Chinese because the assistant coach is Chinese with very broken English.

oh yeah, with translators.

Understandable under the circumstances, sure?

Jarring? You tell me.
