I blame this all on the Pens for not doing their job and knocking out the Habs!

Of course, unless I'm mistaken, and everything else being the same, the Flyers would be facing the BJs if the Pens advanced instead of the Habs. I can see the same type of result against the BJs if none of the big guns on the Flyers show up to produce.

We match up quite well against the BJ's actually. They are doing well against teams that have a bunch of high skill forwards that don't crash the net.

Habs have been playing this style for at least 2 seasons now. They play every single game this way, like they are possessed. If it was so deadly they won't have finished 24th.

I’m struggling bad on coming up with positives from today...so it was good that Elliott got some playing time since those back to back games are going to happen

At what time in the first period did they get their first shot? How does that compare historically?

The Habs shut the Flyers down defensively today. They are no where near as good defensively as Columbus is. If the Flyers don't pick it up from today, they don't match up well against anyone. The Habs haven't played every single game this way. Other wise they would have finished better than they did in the standings. I think you're wrong on both counts.

If you didn’t back read, you’d know the entire team is being put through a wood chipper.

Agreed. The version of the Flyers that played today, would have likely lost to each of the league's bottom dwellers this season. Even Detroit... perhaps.

Ok here is a try

Goal 1. Look at the play by Myers and Giroux on the first goal.

Cross-ice pass by Suzuki to Gallagher. Covered by Myers, who has good position. But (this will be a theme), The smaller Gallagher doubles back, completely flat-footing Myers (who has problems with quick change of directions in a small space, as Barzal showed us). Forwards are not expecting Myers to get beat so bad, they are relaxed, and Giroux completely loses Tatar who slides in from way out to score.

Goal 2. Look at Braun, Ghost on second goal.

Play starts with a stupid turnover by Hart, who has no business going back there under pressure when that is not his strength. Hart loses his stick. Bit of a cluster(frank), with pucks being batted out of the air. A little confusion, with Couts and Braun going towards the same player (Domi).

Ghost is left alone in the crease and has terrible positioning. One MTL player gets behind him (Kotkaniemi) and he goes after the other (Lehkonen). He falls to his knees and is beaten as Lehkonen is able to complete a pass he should not have been able to make to an open Kotkaniemi. Ghost ended up doing nothing to impair either.

Goal 3. pp goal.

I don't see how Tatar gets so open. They completely busted our coverage by their quick puck movement. Braun screens the goalie, but I don't fault him on that. I think Pitlick is the one who should have been covering Tatar. In many ways, this is the worst goal.

Goal 4. Look at Pitlick and Braun.

Pitlick cannot get puck in deep at the red line. Players are heading off on a line change. Turnover again.

Arnia races down the left, Braun is on him. Again, Arnia doubles back, and Braun ends up overplaying badly. Arnia gets a pass off, and it deflects off Ghost's skate. Lucky goal. (Bullpoop to Arnia aiming for Ghost's angled skate for a bank). That was a pass.

Goal 5. Look at the timing off the line change on the pp!

Why is everybody going off on a line change when Canadiens have possession near their own blue line on a pp?! Because they underestimate how quick this team is.

To a certain extent, overall theme is:

1. Turnovers and bad line changes, both from not being prepared for the MTL speed.

2. MTL players are hitting our zone with too much speed. Don't turnover in neutral ice and if they are coming fast from their own zone, hedge them off or make them go around you, especially when our 3rd pairing is on the ice. This is not McDavid and Draisatl we are talking about here. There will be a few turnovers of their own.

3. if they start to dump it in to get around 2, punish them.

Habs play the exact same style every game. They are known for that. They are probably the fastest team in the league.

Whether they are successful with tha is a different story. Today they were allowed to be successful. But that fast motor, fast skating, fore-checking game? That's their stuff.

You're confused. If they played the way they played today, all season, they would've been a playoff team in a normal season. Obviously they haven't or their record wouldve been better. They're just a team playing with house money with nothing to lose and with determination

The STYLE! Not the result! Or the execution!

The former depends only on them. The latter two-the opponents have a say.

I am scared but cautiously optimistic.

I would be more worried if I saw a multiple set of problems. But I saw the same ones, over and over. I saw a unprepared team get ripped up by a single blade. Not a team that was killed by many different cuts.

You will see a completely different Flyers next game.

This was a strangely comforting article.

Personally, I’ve had a bad week so I think my fandom will be better for game 3. Since it’s a playoff game, it can’t just be thrown out. I really hope game 3 doesn’t look a thing like today.

Very impressive.... but I’ll keep it simple. If they don’t start skating and playing like this is playoff hockey, then they will be lucky if Game 1 isn’t the only game they win.

Montreal came ready for playoff hockey. The Penguins and Flyers did not. Tip of the cap to the Habs. If the Flyers decide to up their tempo and work ethic, they will win the series. If they don’t, they won’t have to worry about the short layoff between seasons.

What I saw was an one-dimensionality to our downfall. You did not see breakaways and players being deked and tremendous sniping. You saw in 4 of the 5 goals one or more of the following: bad line change/turnover/defenseman not taking the body/bad back-checking/bad crease-clearing.

All mistakes made by us, because of underestimating the other team.

The other goal was a pp.

This is not the Flyers I watched this year. I cannot imagine they will let it continue.

I think this stat pretty much sums it up. The Flyers have a combined total of ZERO goals from their top five scorers in the regular season. Not one goal from any of them since the restart. That ain't gonna cut it!

We can do a lot of analysis of play by play and every goal. None of it matters. Fact is that the Habs outskated the Flyers everywhere on the ice and won just about every single battle for a free puck. They outskated and wanted this game much more than the Flyers today. In every facet of the game. It was professionals against mens league team. The question is whether or not the Flyers are embarrassed enough to put it behind them and rebound. No rebound, no chance. The Habs look good, the Flyers look like they're disinterested in competing. We'll see Sunday.
