They’re a good team, im glad they got knocked out cause they have a legit shot at a run every year.
- neem55

Right now they are in shambles with no answers to their self inflicted mess. Talent alone doesn't make for a good team. What are you basing the above narrative on

Do you see now what our Canucks are doing in putting the pieces together.

Technically, the NHL counts the play-in as part of the 2019/2020 playoffs. If you go to NHL.com and look at playoff leaders you will see Sebastian Aho at the top of the point leaders. They are counting his points against NYR. If the NHL considers the play-in as playoffs then the leafs literally made the playoffs this year.

That would end your argument, no?

- bloatedmosquito

So the Leafs made the playoffs and had a shot at Laffy in the lotto. Interesting....

I understand what you are saying but how they are keeping stats isnt really making the "Qualifying Round" the playoffs.

Regular season. Try and remember, the context of my post was about the media hyping the Leafs as cup faves for those first 3 seasons of AM. Yet they tread water then fell out after AM's rookie season in the playoffs.

You are trying to hard to dance around what was said in my original post.

They’ve got a shot every year with that group of forwards . They just can’t seem to defend or show up for big games, muzzin was a good step, but hopefully they keep underperforming. Cause let’s be honest about what this is.

They lose players like Barrie now... no money to replace them. They need to tap into the big three O players to plug holes... which we all know just makes holes elsewhere.

The 13thoa should help... er wait... Canes got that for taking PM off their hands.

Who thinks that keeping wild animals as a pet is normal when you live on an Island. Glad to hear you’re not in jail, though the hospital isn’t much better I imagine. The food is probably worse...

I haven't even looked at it. Apparently I missed out on sausages with brown gravy last night. Mrs. Marwood is searching Lonsdale for a Chef's salad and a baguette for tonight. Looks like I go back to the island tomorrow.

Cause let’s be honest about what this is. It’s a team with huge expectations because they have one of the best forward groups in hockey, not because they are somehow worse than they were 3 years ago. That’s just stupid.

They don't have a shot this year. You need to get into the playoffs to have a shot. They missed.

You are telling me why they fail. When you do that, it sounds like you are agreeing with me.

Can you give us some links? Which media were saying the Leafs were the cup favourites in his first 3 years (or ever)?

I'm not trying to join the fray. I just think those articles would be hilarious to read as we sit and wait for game 2 and they're... Well you know.

They actually said in their statement ahead of time that for statistical purposes, the points count towards playoff totals, however the teams the lost out will be considered "non-playoff teams"

The constant over payment and the "robbing Peter to pay Paul" situation is something that stuck out in the video I posted earlier as something they have done on constant repeat for decades, ever since the 60s. They continue to trade key 1sts away and trade players who turn out to be stars in other cities.

They've never able to put a complete team together because of the premium they pay to their stars.

Yes it does. Playoff statistics include points achieved during the play-in. As far as the NHL is concerned it’s the playoffs and those stats will be considered when the Conn Smythe is awarded to the most valuable player in the playoffs.

I think it’s cut and dry.

Anyway, you and I can agree that the leafs suck.

I know, just arguing semantics because I’m bored.

Using this season to defend an position is crazy because it’s an outlier. That’s why there will be an asterisks.

Its tail chasing for sure. I made this argument often with people about the Leafs jumping too quickly after the AM draft. They have been trading away too many 1st rounders for rentals or vets and if that doesnt produce in a short window, then they start robbing peter.

They traded 1st rounders for FA and Muzzin and to get rid of PM. Muzzin hasnt been a difference maker. Andersen shines in the regular season but can't string two good games in a row in the playoffs... if they make it. Think of how the 13th oa would help them in their current cap situation moving forward. Canes will draft a keeper for sure.

The NHL does not consider them playoff games far as I can tell.

They count the stats as playoff stats due to the way contract bonuses are constructed. The contracts only stipulate 2 kinds of stats therefore they had to pick one or the other, and if you call them playoff points, the teams don't have to pay out regular season bonuses should the players reach them during play in. It's about the money imo.

If they considered them playoffs, Van could have lost and still would have had to give up their 1st, which we know was not the case.

Yeah, the league made it clear that the qualifier was just that, a round to qualify for the playoffs.

Here's another way to skin the cat... what about the other teams collecting playoff stats like Tampa etc in their round robins? The teams that lost those series were not eliminated. Hard to call that playoffs because of the stats.

That's not the measure for the Canucks. it was taking the next step and coming together as a team and making the playoffs. Check and check on team building. Beating the Cup champs in the 1st round would be a monumental leap forward in that team build process.

Either way the Canucks are a team. In contrast to the leaf love you are giving to that club of douchbags, that is not a team; and that is why they are out and looking for answers in a step back.

All I can point to is the collection of playoff stats. I’ve seen nothing but personal opinion to counter that point.

Doesn’t really matter either way. The original discussion was if the leafs are slipping further away from cup contention since drafting Matthews. This bizarro season was used as evidence that the leafs are because they “missed” the playoffs.

Again, this season is different from any other NHL season in history so hard to use it as an example of a teams true nature or organizational position.
