1. Nylander to Nash for Ekholm and a 2nd. (Savings of 3.2 mill)

2. Kapanen to Anaheim for Manson (Could be a pick included one way or the other) (taking on 900k in salary)

3. Sign Toffoli with money from Ceci leaving (4.5 mill)

Overall, the leafs replace Nylander and kap with Toffoli’s production, which could be a wash. They get a RD and a LD for a solid 2nd pairing. All while lowering their cap hit by 2.3 mill.

I like you deal on Manson too. Signing Ryan Graves or trading for him would be a good target.

The third one is a good idea but I think cap space is going to force younger players or bringing Speeza back.

MM was better than a ppg player the past 2 seasons. Can you really trade a guy like that? The answer is yes. And there are nearly 11 million reasons to do this. You can’t have 3 guys eat up 33million dollars of your cap.

Proposed trade parter: Colorado
Colorado gets a Marner
Toronto gets Graves (top +/-, defensively responsible and upside) as well as Jost and a late pick. Cost controlled assets in exchange for cap relief.

2. Trade Andersen at the draft for picks. This makes more sense after #3

Proposed trade partner: New Jersey
Toronto gets ARZ/VAN first round pick from NJD (NJ has 3 first rounders in 2020).
New Jersey gets Andersen, because they badly need goaltending and should have an otherwise respectable team this year.

3. Sign Robin Lehner

Cap hit comes in around $6-6.5M for 3 years. Toronto gets a goalie with a serious compete level and something to prove to the league.

I realize this doesn’t do a ton to solve their biggest flaw which is defence. But goaltending helps, and their defensive problems are more system/approach based than they are personnel. Graves will help. Sandin and Liljegren will be ready soon. And Pietrangelo is too pricey in term for the leafs to go after. The cap relief will be needed as new contracts become required, but in the meantime it allows for a quality rental each of the next couple years to bring in another middle pairing D man. To all of this, there is a caveat... a 4th move!

4. Replace Dubas as GM. Keep him on in a capacity more directly related to analytics. But get someone a bit more seasoned running the show when it comes to franchise altering decisions. Dubas will not trade any of the big four, because he thinks it will show weakness. That bullheaded approach protecting his pride will be the undoing of this franchise. If he’s allowed to advise without having final say in the moves being made, that will bode better for the leafs.

He turned the Kings into a two-time cup winning team. Guess what won the kings those championships... defence! Sure, they had talent up front. But Kopitar, Brown, Carter, Richards... none of these guys had the bonafide superstar status that both Tavares and Matthews carry. Granted, the Kings are now old and nothing like what they used to be. But that’s hockey. And nobody can take away their 2 cups won during Deaner’s tenure as GM.

This is how you fix the leafs. I wish I hadn’t ignored Seattle’s texts asking me to interview for their GM position.

ok so I have three moves to make and I'm the Gm. First I don't believe in trading within my division at all and only within my conference if I'm getting a hell of a deal. I have 73 mil in cap space for next season and changes are needed. I don't believe in trading any of my top three at this time so what's left. From what I've seen we are to soft we need grittier depth forwards and to improve our D.

Trade....... nylander/johnson/sandin and our 2nd round pick in 2021 to Minnesota for ..marcus foligno/dumba and their prospect matthew boldy.
this trade brings us in a physical forward who can score a right shot D and a nice prospect in boldy

Move 2

Trade ......kerfoot / kapanen / liljegren and our first to Anahiem for...adam henrique/ josh manson and ryan kesler for the ltir cap relief for 2 years.
this deal brings us a scoring depth center and a physical right hand D. also giving us some cap flexibility with the 6.8 mil ltir cap relief.

Move 3

Sign unrestricted free agent tyler tofolli or taylor hall whoever can be signed in the 7 mil range.
