Leafs are painfully light on RD. Subban could help, but 31 year old PK and a 1st (assuming it's the 2020 - 7th overall) for 31 goal-man Nylander is an overpay, even if NJ keeps 1/2 salary for PK. Nylander can fetch a better deal. Carolina is deep in Dmen and light on RW and their goalies are garbage. (1): to Caro - Nylander and Freddie Anderson, to Tor - Dougie Hamilton and a 1st this year (#7 pick). (2) - sign Robin Lehner as a UFA. (3) sign Alex Pietrangelo as a UFA. Move out contracts to make the Cap thing work, lots of young guns on the Marlies to fill the holes created by the cap dump.

First trade is almost even cap for even cap. leafs get a top pairing guy for Riley finally along with 2 quality middle 6 fowards and some much needed grit with miles wood

trade 2 is about freeing up money. johnson at 3.4 and dermont whos an rfa probably in the 2.5 range so around 6 mil goes out for chasion 2.1 and bear whos an rfa probably in the same range as dermont 2.5 but is right handed which the leafs desperately need and save 1.5-2 mil in the process

lastly sing the big nasty penalty killing machine in Gudas giving the leafs 3 right handed dman and d pairs something like this Riley PK, Muzzin Gudas, Sandin Bear...a huge improvement a 3 left and 3 right handed d...

The loss of marners offensive should be replaced by Pk, zacha, wood, and Robertson. these moves alos improve the leafs overall team depth which just wasnt strong enough

The Leafs can’t fix this mess. They had their window but signed Tavares. Great player. But they already had 1C and 2C in Matthews and Kadri. The 6mil savings would have gone elsewhere
Now with COVID19, expensive players like Nylander, Marner and to a lesser extent Kapanen and Johnsson with get you 50 cents on the dollar.
The only move is to fire sports boy Dubas and start over. The cast of Glee are not going to win the cup.

Realistically, move Marner for a legit D man. Move Nylander for defensive depth. Sign or trade for a goalie.

I’d say keep Marner and move JT for the D man but that contract takes so many teams out of the mix.

Overall, the leafs replace Nylander and kap with Toffoli’s production, which could be a wash. They get a RD and a LD for a solid 2nd pairing. All while lowering their cap hit by 2.3 mill.

make calls on UFAs Braun, Hamonic, and Tanev. See about short term deals. I'd guess they'd be less than Muzzins deal but somewhere in and around there. Shorter term preferably.

Even see if Buff has a year or two left in him.

Theres a couple of RHD.

Then I'd have a look at Manson. Hopefully just a Johnsson + to get him.

Another to look at is Pesce. Carolina is loaded on the backend and at some point they'll need to make room for their young guys in the A.

Another depth RHD is Bortuzzo. STL has a loaded backend and time will tell what happens with Pietro but Bort would be a nice addition of toughness on the backend.

Those are the D I'd target that seem like they could be available.

Also I'd play Sandin full time next year. Have him on PP1 or PP2. Rielly running the other unit.
