Anders Lee was a beast last night. Maybe the most underrated player in the NHL.

It was a bad hit but the penalty was also sufficient punishment for it. There's no "excuse" that explains away what he did as some sort of unavoidable accident, but it also wasn't like he flew across the neutral zone and blew up his skull either.

A fine would have been acceptable but it's miles from a suspendable play.

The Capitals are pissed because it's Backstrom and of course they're going to act like Lee pulled out a sharpened toothbrush and shanked him. The irony is highly enjoyable though.

Definitely bias opinion which you are welcome to and being a fan as well I understand. But I want to understand, as you see it, there shouldn’t have even been a penalty because Backstrom skated into Lee who just stood there? Am I understanding you correctly?

I'm fine with the penalty.. just think the whole idea of Lee meant this coming from the Caps fans is nuts. I just spoke to a buddy who is a HUGE Caps guy and played hockey in college..etc. He said the same most of us feel on this thread. Backstrom been doing this too long to not be looking like that.. (my only issue on the penalties is it should have been an instigator too.. I am 100% sure if that was Mayfield he would have gotten an instigator).

actually sorry to hear that.. He is a great player. One of 2 on that team I like.

If this was Martin or Cal I would tend to agree with you, but It's Anders Lee.. he isn't a guy who looks to lay people out. It's the first 2 minutes of a playoff game and a guy is skating into him... I really don't think anyone would have done it different from what he did.. stood his ground and braced to be hit. ... literally felt remorse immediately as he was getting jumped.

the only time Lee is aggressive is in battles in front of the net or after whistle scrums sticking up for teammates. Clearly I am biased.. but I just don't see it.

I think back to Lee smashing Guentzels face with his elbow. Nasty and intentional.

Agreed. But...I'd consider dressing Ross. Not only to patrol (although, yeah, that'd be a reason), but also to avoid the Standard Komarov Ill-Timed Penalty.

Although, I guess Komarov's a bit of an agitator, too, so that could get the Caps even more off their game than Johnston being in there.

Looks like all-around hockey good guy Tom Wilson (aka Jesus on Ice) has some thoughts about the Lee hit.

I've seen Lee pull some dirty moves. Not often, and this wasn't dirty, but he took the opportunity.

player suspended 3 times in 10 months. It's hard to see him complaining, but players take their cues from the coach. If Caps lose, we'll hear Toddler blame it on not having Bacs.

Bacs should strengthen his neck so his head doesn't bounce off the ice so hard.
