Does anyone have thoughts on what Jarry's value is in a trade? I think the move is to resign Murray and trade Jarry. I think Murray/Jarry are in the same spot MAF/Jarry were in back in 2017.

The move in 2017 was to trade Murray. You ride out MAF for the duration of the Crosby/Malkin era, and then you rebuild. There was word the Flames were willing to pay a good price for Murray.

Now, you have Murray who hasnt played well down the stretch. They cannot expect Murray to demand a big contract, he just cannot. If he is still sticking to the big demands he wanted last summer, then this is moot. But to me, Jarry has trade value. He is young, his contract should be reasonable, and he showed his stuff last season.

Maybe I just haven't noticed, but I haven't heard the word "generational" in terms of Lafreniere.

He may not be on Sid/McDavids level considering their centers putting up ridiculous points but he’s the closest thing to it being a winger.

I think he just needed some more time. I remember him playing well here, but just not producing.
- Rinosaur

Maybe, I just don't recall anyone having belief in him at that point. Might have been a Perron situation where he's good before and after the Pens just doesn't fit here.

I don't play the game of only giving credit to GMJR for the moves you don't like. They're all on him, good and bad. He added a top 6 wing with 3.5 years of control and a top 4 defenseman with 7. That's not tinkering at the edges. How many teams can you name who added 2 long-term, top half of the line-up players? Your standard is a little unrealistic IMO.
- Tojo.

That's all true, but he also traded away a top 6 wing in Kessel (which I agree he had to do), so really, Zucker simply replaced Kessel. Marino replaced Schultz. So like I've said, JR is standing still with a team in decline. I still stand by my statement that when other teams are loading up, JR is bargain bin shopping for chumps and washed out players. Most teams weren't embarrassed the previous year by an inferior team and don't have an aging core of generational talents.

Your three cups in the cap era compared to everyone else in the running’s zero cups combined in the salary cap era tells me otherwise. Not to mention the Panthers, Wild, Jets, And Preds have never won at all. So no, you don’t deserve the first pick.

I think the word generational just gets thrown around too much. I'd reserve it for guys like Sid, Ovie, and McDavid. But that's just semantics, he's supposed to be an elite talent.

This is what I recall as well. So many players seem to have fit this description. Maybe Sully is the problem here?

Yeah, I'll take him. I'm still more excited to see the hockey world lose their minds if the Pens get him.

Yeah I didn't like the return though I do like POJ, but I was fine moving Kessel's contract out. Know I'm still in the minority there, I just think he's a PP specialist at this point in decline.

Marino replaced Gudbranson technically since Schultz finished the year here. Both are upgrades IMO.

He has to give him one of them regardless, so what does it matter if it's this year or next? How do you next year the Pens don't finish even worse and draft higher? What if next year is a deeper draft?
- Rinosaur

This is supposedly a deep draft ...and one would think the Pens consider themselves a playoff team and unlikely they'd be picking lower than 15th next year.

most of all though... we need injection of youth asap. if we can get an impact player on an ELC in one year earlier, they could help with the window more than a player drafted a year later.

It was a tough situation and none of us really know what happens behind the scenes, ever, which is why I hesitate to fault JR too much, even though it might seem like I do at times. I will say, though, that just like with Sully, JR has made some painfully bad decisions in the past couple of years. None of them are hindsight scenarios. I think JR is trending in the wrong direction. Like someone else said, I think a fresh perspective without bias would do wonders to reshape this roster.

As for Marino/Schultz, I'm just talking about his place in the lineup. Marino and prime Schultz are probably a wash overall. Zucker for prime Kessel is definitely a downgrade. But I agree, it's a tough job, moves are easier said than done, nobody knows what really happens, and that pesky cap is always getting in the way.

Prime Schultz is like just 2017 though lol. He was great that one year, not close before or after.

Prime Kessel over Zucker absolutely, but only Zucker is in his prime. Even without the rumored off-ice issues, it was the right time to move Kessel who has lost a step but it wasn't well-known yet.

Yeah, that would have made life so much easier. Then we really could awing another big deal or just have a stronger prospect pool.

I agree with all of that. My main point is that to be a true Cup contender, the Pens needed to maintain that level or close to it. Easier said than done, absolutely. However, the Pens are regressing every year and many of JR's moves are accelerating that regression. The moves he is not making that he could have made is also a problem (i.e., the 3rd for Marleau when better options for the same cost were available).

I was curious to see what players are projected to be around 15, but I stumbled on upon this. Not sure if this site is run by a Pens fan lol

Lol. Nice to see there are 4 centers mocked between 14-20. I’d like them to go C if they pick 15.

Wow, and I thought I was going to have to turn in my Pens fan card for wanting the Flyers to beat Boston and/or Washington if it comes to it. Maybe even Tampa, too. Can't stand those guys.

I agree with TOR, but my bigger worry is NYR. Anyone but those two and I'll be happy, especially not NYR.
