The compelling interests (AP wanting to max his career earnings and some team(s) competing to win at all costs) never go away.

Maybe some guys sign a 1 yr deal if the risk of injury is low but I can't imagine the best guys entering their 30's sign short term.

- The Law

Yeah this is about the bottom line on the Pietrangelo thing.

Would be pleasantly surprised if I am wrong, but I think people need to put the pipe down on that one and smoke something a little more reasonable for the exact reasons you just stated.

5.30pm today Hintz and Faksa play.
you should all watch to understand what it means to put in 100% effort in combination with skill.

Yes because no one here understands that. Just (frank) off with your condescending bullpoop. Between muzzin and what you just said about fan jealousy on Marner... Haven't you already blown your moron quota for the month out of the water anyways?

That's why the Manson deal makes so much sense. The money is right and the term and age are perfect.
- dozerD10

YES! I've wanted Manson for a couple years. We'll take him...thanks Doz!

He played like a scared 14 yr old... Softer than baby POOP

Well, when he gets traded because of his crap contract, he can blame himself and no one else. Maybe his Dad.

In all seriousness, Marner lost a lot of fans respect during the series.

Yep.

But this is false logic.

If you lose salary and young talent, you can acquire back picks, prospects and lower cap-hit players in return.

- Atomic Wedgie

It's not false logic, per se...it's an acquisition scheduling issue?

You have players making money too soon when needing other high end pieces. You need to balance ELCs with big money players.

Point is, losing a Johnsson and/or Kapanen to grab a UFA is losing "talent" now, but the picks hopefully pan out later. Scheduling??

Having a better defensive presence in their own zone is a big need obviously. But while fighting may not be a deterrent anymore, I think the difference is made in having a player on the ice that makes the opposition put more second guesses into where he is every time they look to cross our blueline.

A guy like Manson would make a huge difference in that regard. Dubois didn't really take off until Muzzin went down. If you can employ that threat on 2/3 pairings things are a hair different.

- joel878

Exactly.

I have a hard time with the guys on here saying grit/heart/hard work/heavy play...doesn't matter.

If you have to play looking over your shoulder in fear of a big hit, it changes your game. If someone might punch you in the face for taking liberties, you think twice. We're not talking goons here, but hard workers with talent willing to make the other team pay.

If you play the Leafs and all they do is a stick check or fly by, you can play wide open without fear. Not the way hockey was ever meant to be played. IMO.

It was really hard NOT to notice how soft he was playing...not that he was the only one but definitely the most expensive one.

I would've bet it was all over the news.

Yes it does. Makes sense for both teams to look into that type of deal.

I'm not going to say no to a guy like Pietro... But (frank)ing hell, some of the same guys on here complaining we signed Tavares to a big number in free agency are touting doing the same with Pietrangelo as the obvious solution. We have had to have learned enough to know by now that big cap into a few players may not be a slam dunk solution.

I like the deal we discussed... (Marner + Bracco for Silfverberg + Manson + Larsson + pick #36)

Im also liking the idea of Arvidson + dman + picks for Marner. Which is perfect. Couldn't hockeybuzz trade Marner without really exploring that market for max potential. 🤣

- joel878

Bracco?

Seriously?

I'd say the fans are on him more than the press is on him.

Apparently he was trending on Twitter yesterday - and like all things Twitter, it wasn't good.

It's the curse of playing for the Leafs - the pendulum swings like a franking jackhammer (I realize it's a horrible mixed metaphor, but I'm in a bad mood).

Oh get off your high horse. 🤣

The full conversation was Marner and a prospect, Bracco came up from a 'no one cares which prospect' point of view, not a 'Bracco is uber valuable' point of view.

This is a friendly neighbourhood reminder that understanding context is important before gunning right for the cynical seriously.

So where was Hyman this series? I love the guy but he was pretty much invisible except for the times they all pulled it together.

Tavares never got going till game 3 or 4 (purposefully blocking out details).

I'll give the GM'ing a shot:

Sign Pietrangelo ...say $8M/
Trade Nylander, Johnsson, Kerfoot, Dermott and Liljegren = ~$16m - some for picks and some to Anaheim for Manson...add picks each way to balance, etc...

Our D:

Reilly, Pietra 1A ($8m add)
Muzzin, Holl 2A
Sandin, Manson 2B ($5M add)

Defense looks really solid...and $3M to add up front.

Hyman, Matthews, Marner
Micheyev, JT, Kapanen
Robertson, Spezza, NEW ADD
Clifford, Engvall, Goat

(frank) this, D looks good but then line 3 and 4 suck sweaty balls. I'll go research some Forwards and come back with something better.

Hyman was noticeable and he didn't look bad to my casual eye test. No sure what his fancy stats look like. While he wasn't great by any stretch, I would hardly consider him to be part of the problem. I'd take him on Tampa's 4th line somewhere. He can't be worse than Paquette.

Apparently there's a verbal agreement not to trade Nylander. isn't Marner a better trade target?
