I agree the Leafs need to improve their defensive corps.
But it might be more complex.
Championship teams play great team defence.
Do, the Leafs have the forwards that can shut down the other teams top line. I don't know the answer. The Nylander fail in game 5 speaks to the need for a strong defensive capability at the forward position.
Tampa is going to need to trade Cerelli. He is a gem that plays a really strong 200' game.

All the Columbus forwards combined make the same amount as 34, 91, 16 and 88 make. Leafs shot under 2% 5 vs 5 and were out scored 9-8. As one commenter put it, ‘The jackets play like they’re hungry. The leafs play like they’re fed.’ - aminnes

Lou's teams make the playoffs.
You can argue 100 times about which individual players look better on paper - but team > individual players. - MaximusAurelius
Why is it suddenly "Winning a round" becomes such a big deal? Islanders have accomplished squat. It became a big deal now that Leafs have not won a round in so long.

Leafs were coming off a season where they were the worst team in the league.
Four years ago. - Leafs43
Avs were the worst team in the league 3 years ago, and now they’re one of the most complete teams in the league.......that’s what competent management and not blowing your wod on 3 players does. |

It’s a big deal because the leafs haven’t done it in nearly 2 decades |

When the Leafs did it yearly I was told it was meaningless until you win a cup that's why I ask. When Leafs made conference finals I was told it wasn't a big deal. |

Muzzin going down really hurt the Leafs. But it is not an excuse. The kids just played uninspired hockey. Soft, timid hockey. Will not win anything in the playoffs. |

The isles lost their captain and best player and were still able to become a better team.
The isles have accomplished more than the leafs the past two years...and the leafs are supposedly a stanley cup contender in some people's eyes. |

Tampa doesn't need to trade Cirelli. He's 23 years old. They'll trade Johnson or Gourde or even Palat before they'll trade Cirelli. |

Leafs are not generally thought of as a cup contender at all. And Islanders were 4-4 in the playoffs last year. Give me a break.
