I’m no leaf expert but didn’t management have all the leverage in contract negotiations? If he held out so what? Let him sit.

I don’t think he’s a catalyst for this team. He’s talented and adds scoring depth. If I managed a franchise he’s not the player I’d build around. To me he’s just a solid piece to the roster puzzle.

That contract (paired with other high end contracts) puts undue pressure on management to be creative in filling the rest of the roster out. As we all know, most management teams in the NHL are not that creative so in reality these contracts become a liability.

makes me think of Kessel's contract in a way
I would let him sit but it was over my pay grade.

IMO if his point total go down, then I'd agree with you.
I'd give him one more year with the leafs

12 million for Tavares, eh?
- Steven_Seagull

my bad, mixed up matthews (11.7) and tavares (11)......you're right, at 12 it's a disaster, but at 11 he's a bargain

Why does his contract have to be a "bargain"? He's earning 11M and that seems pretty (frank)ing reasonable for a Top 10 C in the league.

The Blue Jackets aren’t trading Werenski. Nor are they trading Jones... yet. Plus, Werenski is more valuable then Marner, so I’m absolutely not adding a player to the deal if I’m Columbus.

Rather have a top pairing defenseman then Marner. Most teams think that way. You have to draft them and pray they develop.

How do you blame a guy for trying to bring in an excellent mentor with good speed and put up almost 30 goals? The fault for the 13th overall pick is only Dubas’.
Metrics and assumptions that based on great offence would comes playoffs leaving a first round pick in the mid to mid-late round. Thus, leading Dubas to believe trading the first to get rid of Marleau’s contract was an analytical decision.
Trading Kadri and Marleau for Kerfoot and Barrie was a bad summer for Kyle.
At 13th overall the Leafs could land a very solid defensive prospect or a great goaltending prospect.

Blaming Dubas for not trading away Nylander, or a different player with a larger cap, to bring in obvious help on defence is why Dubas looks like a ghost of himself today compared to when he was the assistant GM under Lou.

Crosby
Malkin
Toews
Matthews
McDavid
Kopitar

All have a high cap hit % than Tavares. Eichel isn’t far off (13.33 vs 13.84).

CapGeek says Malkin = 9.5 AAV and Kopitar = 10M AAV... both below 11M
Oh heck - Crosby AAV is 8.7

Saying JT gets paid like a top-10 C is just wrong since there aren't ten C's that get 11M. He's paid well above the average of the top 10 C's.

You mean Cap-hit % on the team that spends the most?. Of course their players cap-hit % will be lower. Put JT on LA and see what the % is.

JT is a PPG player - very good. But not 11M good.

That’s not how it works.

It’s the percentage of the salary cap ceiling when the deal is signed. Not the team salary, but the actual league salary cap ceiling.

OK - I had that wrong.

Still don't see him earning that 11M. Avg 1 point-per-game? Gotta do better than that.

The Islanders were also offering him 11M to re-sign, and the Sharks were offering 13M...

The cap hit is fine. He’s not the problem - Marner is.

Well the Sharks are idiots - paying 19.5M for Burns+Karlsson?

I agree Marner's contract will be an issue.

Bullpoop. Sidney Crosby's deal was still seen as a discount in the day, even though the cap hit was enormous at the time.

You're talking best player in hockey vs becoming 2nd best C on your team.

Let’s help Dufas out in case we win....

Nylander and Holl for Ekblad
Kapanen for P Myers
Sign Tanev as UFA
Johnsson for T Thompson
Dermott for 2nd rd pick
Let Clifford walk
Spezza retires
Sign Lehner
Trade Anderson to Calgary for Bennett

Laffy Matthews Hyman
Robertson Tavares Mikheyev
Engvall Kerfoot Barabanov
Thompson Bennett Korshkov
🐐

Rielly Tanev
Muzzin Ekblad
Sandin Myers

- mr.sir

Sorry, man. I like Kapanen. His dad was beloved here. But you’re not gonna get a young and talented 2nd line defenseman for a winger who is bounced around in the middle 6. Especially when Philly has RWs to spare when Lindblom returns.

They’d just assume try Farabee, Frost, and Aube-Kubel in that role, who cost them nothing and they won’t have to protect when Seattle comes knocking.
