Bossy was only labeled "soft", because he didn't fight which was extremely unusual (unheard of?) in the 1970s when he entered the NHL. Otherwise, he finished checks, etc.

The one time he did fight, he was a bloody mess.

The pounding Bossy's back took from not shying away from contact tell a different story.

IMO, if Bossy had a healthy 20 year career, he would have had 900+ goals. What he did in 9 healthy years was amazing. Still holds the highest goals per game average in NHL history. Even Gretzky said "...there's always Bossy" because he ruined so many of their chances to beat the Islanders.

I disagree JS. Bossy didn’t check. I could count on 2 hands the amount of hits he would throw in a season. Trots and Gilles were the grit on that line.
His job was to score. Get open in the slot or on the rush avoid traffic and shoot the puck which he did. Probably the best finisher in the league imho.

Also truly no nhl player is soft. Just to make it to the NHL you have to be a tough sob.

Of course, Trottier and Gillies were grittier than Bossy. Gillies was one of the toughest guys around in an era when there were a lot of tough guys. Trottier hit like a Mack Truck. I remember he and Potvin collided in practice and Potvin ended up the worse of the two.

By today's standards, Bossy would not be considered soft. He threw more checks in a season than John Tavares will accumulate in his career.

It is good, you’ll enjoy it. It definitely tastes better after an Islanders win!

He's had the generational tag attached to him so no team is moving him. If the leafs got him they would move one of the other 4 for d and insert him
- Upstate_isles

I didn’t specifically mean the leafs but they’d prob be a good fit. Also didn’t realize Laff was “generation” so I guess he’ll stick w whoever gets him.

Rangers have a ton of skill and a stud in net and their d isn't terrible they also have the assets to move for a d man should they choose

Sadly they have a really good chance. They must get past Sorokin though.

Totally different game back then..

I'm trying to identify a rational point to that response which says that not shying away from hits is dependent on the era hockey is played in.

Hmmmm......

Ok, there isn't one.

(frank)ing NHL fix

Oilers had a fist full of 1st rounders and well you know. Also I’m not a fan of the Rags coach.

That would be nuts. If Laf is as advertised, the Rangers are serious cup contenders in 2 years.

Absolutely. There were still 8 balls in the bowl.
The butler was palming the winning ball.
