Hains: The Underdogs Had Some Bite

This one is in the books, the Canadiens move on to the REAL Stanley Cup Playoffs!

- Karine Hains

If you don't win 16 "real" playoff games, then your season is a bust. 30 teams fail each year.

Sure, the Habs make it to the dance, but they do not really deserve to be there. Everyone knows it. They got lucky with match up against a listless Pens team on the downswing and about to fire their coach.

Habs are not good enough to win 16 "real" playoff games, so to me, it seems like a real lost opportunity to get a top 10 pick and potentially #1 in a deep draft.

I might think differently if I believed MB had the ability to take advantage of teams up against the cap by leveraging his cap space and bucket of picks. Or the ability to get quality free agents to Montreal (Where for every 10 Alzners we are lucky to get 1 Chariot).

Under the current status, draft picks are the only real way this team could become a contender.

So, cool - the Habs get to have a real playoff series. But the cost is just continued mediocrity until they have another shot at a stud draft pick or two.

Enjoy the ride.

Their defense does not inspire confidence.

Watching them, it feels like Mete and Ouellet are on the ice for half the game.

Draft picks are the only way this team can become a contender?

Tatar, Suzuki, Danault, Chiarot, Weber, Drouin (i'll include him despite the trade looking "meh"), Byron, Armia, Kulak, Petry are all important part of this team who haven't been drafted by this team.

In fact, if the Habs drafting had been better, Bergevin's overall job would look quite (frank)ing stellar right now.

Maybe we're turning a corner with our latest picks looking good these last few years. But you're wrong that the only way to build a team is through getting top 10 picks repeatedly.

Or you know, ask the Oilers and the Leafs how they feel about it?

If you like mediocrity and continue to enjoy maybe making the playoffs and not getting any real impact free agents - good for you.

This team has some good parts, but there are equally as many holes.

In the end I expect more than maybe making the playoffs, not good enough to be a contender.

Almost 30 years of this poop is tiering.

I'm with you about the destination.

We simply disagree on how to get there.

There are numerous exemples of teams being true contenders without ever getting a first overall pick, or even numerous top 10 picks.

People are so infatuated by how Pittsburgh and Chicago won(both of whom not only drafted top players with top 5 picks but also added very good pieces through trades, free agency and waivers) that they are discounting other ways to build a team.

Habs have a very interesting group of prospects, they have good young players already with the team and they still have good veterans surrounding them.

Things aren't perfect, of course adding Lafrenière would have been great, but the experience kids like Suzuki and KK are getting is something you simply cannot buy.
