And Pearson...
- canucksfan1944

RC is correct though, Benning is acquiring these players near the start of their down slide. Too pumped, too soon.

Not a lot of competition.

Probably the biggest reason we have never won a cup

And tanner pearson. And toffoli. And lievo. Oh and motte has been great. But hey, go on don’t let me stop you. He looks like a terrible GM right now and not one that has gotten consistently better with time.

Guys coming to their peak. They will be a contract anchor in 2 years (if retained). The Canucks need to keep building and not going for the championship today. I respect your opinion, however.

I mean at this point. I'd be happy if olli could play a steady 12 minutes a night on the bottom pair and play like he did last night.
- Codes1087

I agree. He doesn't have to come in and be Quinn Hughes. Just earn your minutes and become a regular. After that, he can move his way up the depth chart.

One of the reasons why the Oilers suck is that they didn't/don't get enough value in their non-star picks. Even if OJ and Jake don't turn into the players they were drafted to be, they still need to be regulars. That goes a long way in managing the cap and allowing a team to pick up the high priced talent to complement a cup push.

you’re ability to hate even when you are clearly wrong and have been wrong about this team all year is amazing. Looking forward to your analysis on why this team isn’t getting out of round 1!

Yes, like you said, just two different approaches to windows. JTM is 27, so he still has 5 more good years left I'd think before he really starts to decline, which I think lines up very well with when the young guys will be entering their prime.

The more the Canucks play, the less I think they should sign TT. It's going to cause more headaches with the cap and that window, so cut the losses at this point (unless he signs a really cheap or really short deal.)

Aside from the merits of when the Canucks' window is, one thing I think JB wants to instill was a culture: winning, hard to play against, tough. More than any signing, trade, or draft pick I think JTM has dragged the Canucks into that style. If you look at a lot of the young and talented teams, they haven't made it over the hump yet: Toronto, Edmonton, Buffalo, Calgary... IMO JB doesn't want to wait for them to hit that hump to try and help them over it.

- NewYorkNuck

Well put. It's been JB's outlook from day 1. And that's where I've diverged from management.

It’s the day after a big win so I’ll let the fan-boy enthusiasm go for now. But if it continues it will be addressed harshly.

Canucks made the playoffs. All other success is gravy, this has been a great year. Let’s see what kind of gravy we get!

I opened this question up earlier in the year, but now seems like another good time. Is Hughes the team’s best player?

I’m really starting to lean that way after that series. 27 minutes last night.

define best and if you say most valuable to the team, flesh that out.

imo, how do we define best? best at his position relative to others on the team? is qh a better d-man than ep is a centre?

if i go by gut instinct, i'd still say EP but that is based on what i "feel" rather than what i can articulate. that may change in the future but one thing that won't change is that the answer will be based on gut instinct rather than a clear definition of "best."

I get labeled “hater” by some & “fanboy“ by others... Both are beta minded emotional reactions to praise & criticism. Just calling each situation like I see it

Meh. Niedemeyer was the best ducks player. Gretzky was the best oiler. Kane is the bedt hawk. You can disagree, but it’s actually not that hard to just know who you think the single biggest factor on a team is.

Hughes on Tanev's impact in his development: I don't think you can put a price on it. he does a lot of things in the d-zone that I can't do. Chris is the heart and soul of the team, it's nice to see him get the goal. He's helped me a lot both on and off the ice. #Canucks

Hopefully they sign him to a team friendly deal.

Exactly. Didn't do anything dumb, just a steady game. Noticed him a couple times – covering for Myers after he had a giveaway, and on the PK with Stetcher. He is known for a more offensive role so being trusted on the PK in his first game in the playoffs speaks volumes.
- NewYorkNuck

As posted before, OJ developed into a PK specialist on the Comets this season. It and his passing/play making, which was noticeable last night, is what's going carve him a role on this new core Canuck team.

JTM, Pearson and TT are starting their peak form not down sliding that will take a few years and by then they will have served their purpose.

Podz, Hogs, Rathbone, Woo... maybe Tree and Lind... all coming into the fold sometime next season or shortly after that. OJ starting to carve out role with JV, ZacMac and Gaudette. This all in addition to the top 6 and QH. Who's missing that needs so badly to be added to then make a Cup push?!?

Toffoli is gonna suck ass once he loses a step since he's already slow. And this is coming from someone who's wanted to trade for him for a couple of years now.

Now is not the time to sign him to a multi year deal.
