Remember the reason why the lottery was expanded to include all teams not in playoffs. To disincentive teams from tanking, and to give teams who fought hard but did not make playoffs some chance to get a high pick.

Same reasoning applies now. If all the lower seeded teams lost in play-ins, why should they not get a chance at a lottery pick unlike previous years?

- PT21

Remember the reason why the lottery was instituted in the first place - because the PenQueens were tanking to get the #1 pick.

"RELEASE jvr to THE KRAKEN!"
- cdearth23

I agree, trade him or hopefully the Kraken take him. If they wanted to keep him, they need to go back and look at tape of JVR playing for the Leafs. He obviously found his game there and lost it under AV system. JVR had been dangerous around the net, but he never seems to get there anymore. His skating has always looked odd to me, is he just too slow for the pace AV wants?

I feel they have a good chance at getting him. One to reach cap floor. Can be considered a vet leader or a name to sell to the crowd. Also who knows what magic fletch will work to ensure a certain player is selected. Just hope we are not throwing away first or second round picks.

I disagree. This has nothing to do with the original reason for the lottery. It doesn't make sense in any way for the teams who were in the play in to have that good of a chance at the top pick. They shouldn't get a chance at the top pick because they weren't in the bottom of the league in the standings. The incentive to get in the playoffs and win the Cup is enough.

This is completely not factual. JVR played very well in the regular season before getting hurt. How are you determining that he lost it under Vigneault?

Agreed. His goal production may have been down, but JVR’s all-around game was much improved under AV. If I’m remembering correctly, he also had an absurd case of bad luck during the year when him and TK played with G.

When’s the last time a high pick didn’t turn out to be HOF level talent for the Pens? Honest question
- hereticpride

Jordan Stall and Derrick Pouliot were their last top-10 picks. I don't think they're making it. MAF would have to have a weak class to get in. Also don't think 2002 5th overall pick Ryan Whitney's getting a call.

So basically, every high pick since 1990 excluding Crosby and Malkin.

Or just wait until this weekend to host the draft. All the talk of needing to have the draft early was all horse poop, and I think it was fixed.

You want to create drama and stir up talk when there's no games? Then give them drama and something to talk about by putting the top picking team in limbo.

I think they have a great shot at the 2 seed. I expect a win today. Nobody is touching tampa anyway.

Praying the rags and Pitt don’t get first overall.

Before a few years ago, the worst you could do if you finished last is #2. Now, it is #4. Similarly, your chances of getting in the top 3 if you were ranked better than the 7 worst teams was 0 before 2012. Now its small but far from zero.

In general, the league has "smoothed" the probabilities of landing a top pick by shifting the weight of the probabilities from the very worst teams more towards all of the non-playoff teams. The reasoning is fairly obvious.

Regarding your bolded statement, "shouldn't" is not what we are talking about here. The teams that did not make the playoffs had a crack at picks 1-3 from 2016 onwards.

This year is no different, except you did not know which those non-playoffs teams were at the time of the draft.

That's why I sais "since" as in "after." That's precisely why I chose 1990.

Fleury, to me, is somewhere between Chris Osgood and Curtis Joseph.

I think you could make the case that the entire team played better under AV though, whatever structure he put in place was good for both sides of the puck. Recall people saying Jake much better all around too. I know the original comment was him getting lost or whatever under AV but jvr is paid to score goals and that’s not what he’s doing . He had 8 more goals with the same games last year.

All 8 teams that lose in the qualifying round have a 12.5% chance at the top pick.

It’s truly asinine. The lottery should have only been for the 7 teams who had ZERO chance of winning the Cup. The 8 losers in the qualifiers should have been slotted 8-15 based on regular season points percentage.

This is the only thing the NHL got completely and totally wrong post Covid.

I didn’t know how I would feel about the playoff format. Turns out I love it more than I expected. It’s like March madness. A game on all day everyday. I kind of want them to continue it this way.

I get your meaning so I won't go word police on you. But I see fleury as a step above both cujo and osgood, just my opinion.

Stupid covid cup question. How come the flyers get last change today? Wash came ahead of them in reg season.

Just to clarify some math on the #1 pick:

Remember there was a placeholder team that won the lottery. Specifically, TEAM E who had a 2.5% chance of winning #1.

The 8 placeholder teams summed up to 24.5% chance of getting to #1. Which means that each of those 8 teams only had a 3.065% chance of winning #1 when the places were chosen.

Yes, it is true NOW that the pick placement has been chosen that there is a 12.5% chance for those losing teams to get the #1. But it's not true to say that those losing teams STARTED with a 12.5% chance.

This is the fairest system they could have come up with considering the circumstances. It's definitely annoying that the Penguins suck just enough to have a shot at this. But, we were the beneficiaries of some luck landing the #2 overall a few years ago. I'd still rather be a Flyers fan right now

Flyers are the designated home team. Doesn't have anything to do with regular season records.
