I was tremendously impressed by that goal. He was moving forward fast, Schultz on his back, and yet the puck leaves his blade slower than his forward momentum. You so rarely see that, that's elite.
Then Tomahawk pointed out that Schultz's stick helped and I looked again and he was right. - PT21
just watched it again. maybe it did help a little, but it still looked like he did what he was trying to do in my opinion.
Any chance we see Frost or Bunnaman during the round robin games? Because the Flyers have many bottom six veterans, it would be possible to see each on separate nights with two vets on their line. The only other young players are Farabee and NAK. Farabee isn’t a lock.
I don't want to spend an entire day pooping on Kevin Hayes. Good for him on the nomination, he’s been very good for us. My question is, don’t any of you feel like too much is made of Hayes and not enough credit is given to Matt Niskanen? I feel like I hear Hayes’ name too much and Niskanen’s not enough. - SuperSchennBros
I think it's a valid point that Niskanen doesn't get enough praise relative to what Hayes has been receiving. I look at it as, Hayes is to our forward group what Niskanen is to our D group. In other words, they've both made a significant impact, that is almost equal.
However, I would say Hayes' impact has been slightly more valuable to the team's success. The blow of not having NoPa at all, and losing Lindblom can not be overstated IMO. Having Hayes allows Laughton to play wing, where I feel he's more effective. Seems like Hayes allows other forwards like NAK, Pitlick, & Grant to come into the lineup and concentrate on playing their game. They can be slotted properly by the coaches and don't have to press and try to be more than they are, which they might have to do if not for Hayes presence & strong play. IDK, maybe I'm over-analyzing there...
Exactly.
The Flyer haters have seized on that free agency signing and won’t let it go.
Loved the signing when it happened...love it more even today. Flyers are in great shape cap-wise for years to come.
Flyer haters were looking for a new zinger once bryz left hockey a billion years ago. They think they found it in hayes.
Pathetic.
LET’S GO FLYERS !! !!! - bruceflyers
I didn't automatically love it. I am just a wait and see person in general. I try not to come to quick judgment on any trade/signing. I initially thought Hayes was an overpayment, probably still is, but it's not a ridiculous one in my opinion.
SSB is now asking for more praise for Niskanen when he was one of the people poopting on the trade when it happened because the Flyers retained salary on Gudas.

That's exactly what I thought and said the other day!
But that softness of that little lob, I have never seen him have such deft hands, so I am not sure whether he would achieved what he was trying without that "assist."

I thought the additions had equal value before they happened, but of course, I never imagined losing Patrick for the whole year and Lindblom for most of it. Edge to Hayes now. I think most have now embraced Hayes as the great fit, right personality for the team. The contract is not a problem until it’s a problem. Right person was the right call over some future potential contract issue.
Love what Niskanen and Braun have done for the defense though.
If Hayes gets us a cup, I don't give a rat's ass about the rest of the contract. Let him go Lecavalier on us for all I care. - PT21
Exactly. Some other may not agree, but I'll take 5-6 years of cap hell for a Cup. I've gone 37 years without one, a few more on the other side won't hurt.
I'm not saying I'd be happy if they become non-competitive after a Cup, but I would be content. Just 1 before I die.

Its an interesting thing about Hagg's hits. He is always among the league leaders there. But to the best of my memory, I cannot recall a single open ice hit or even a hip check. All his hits are against the boards, on his side of the ice, and most of them are are on the left quadrant of the D zone next to the goal. They are sneaky hits, not full on thundering hits.
He has fashioned his game very effectively, I think, working on his constraints and his size and strength. He plays mostly within himself. He has probably listened very closely to the coaches and that might be why he is valued.
Ghost has a higher risk/reward game. The question is, do you really need that in your bottom pairing?

Ghost needs sn injury to crack the line up. I’d be surprised if farabee sees much ice time either. There’s a reason flyers got grant and thompson. AV is old school...wants dependable veteran play...offense comes from defense. Hard to argue really.
I’m sure a deep run will mean both will get in...but there’s no need for anyone to lose their sht if they’re not dressing in the first round.

I did not like the Niskanen or Braun trades. I was fine with the players but didn't like eating some of Gudas' salary and I did not like spending multiple picks on Braun. I will admit that both trades have been really great for the Flyers. So Fletcher seems like he knows what he is doing. I am happy he was right.

When wash got brendan dillon at the deadline...they gave up 2 second round picks.
I’d rather have braun straight up...not to mention for a 2 and a 3.
And unlike wash who are in cap hell...we got a regular season out of him which we badly needed as a serious upgrade to our PK and 3rd pairing.
Hayes was a free agent. The only criticism I see valid was the cost. But again free agent. And the cap was expected to continue to rise pre Covid stuff. He has seemed to improve every year and is a big man. His skating may be a hindwrance the last year or two of his contract
But as someone said. If he brings a cup who cares.
Imo he came as advertised or better. I’m glad he is on our team now. And even if slotted as the third line center in 5 years I am comfortable with that.
I almost feel like not hearing a lot about Nisk is exactly what you want.
It means he is playing a solid game that doesnt warrant constant review. - opeth_pa
Absolutely. Plays that quietly effective game with some secondary offense here and there. The less you hear about him, the better. Let Provorov do his thing and be awesome, and let Niskanen do his thing and clean up any messes.

Hagg doesn't go Gudas and run around trying to decapitate people, he just uses his body to pinch players off the puck. He did have 2 noticeable ones, though.

Look at those two hits. They are outside the quadrant I spoke off, but the guy being hit is against the boards. He has his head down, Hagg comes in with full control, seizing the opportunity, doesn't leave his feet, doesn't target anything, doesn't put an extra zing into it, but uses his size and strength in a very measured kinda way.
